Nobody wore those ballcaps.

Wearing the symbol ironically within your own community is one thing. Having it brandished on worldwide television every Sunday is quite another.

No Native American I know would call someone "redskin."

Native American Groups Organizing Protest of Washington Redskins at Cardinals Game

Amanda Blackhorse, a member of the Navajo Nation and leader of a group called Arizona to Rally Against Native Mascots is organizing the protest.

"For over 4 decades Native people urged for a name change, many years before I was born," Blackhorse says in a press release. "This is not a recent issue and with the recent increased momentum, a name change is imminent. This is no longer just about a mascot this is about regaining our respect and place in this country as well as the humanization of Indigenous people."

NCAI's Long Standing Opposition to Harmful "Indian" Sports Mascots
As the nation’s oldest, largest, and most representative American Indian and Alaska Native advocacy organization, NCAI has long held a clear position against derogatory and harmful stereotypes of Native people—including sports mascots—in media and popular culture. In 1968 NCAI launched a campaign to address stereotypes of Native people in popular culture and media, as well as in sports. Since this effort began, there has been a great deal of progress made and support to end the era of harmful "Indian" mascots in sports.

NCAI's position is clear, longstanding, and deeply rooted in our seventy years as a leading voice for Indian Country - we advocate for and protect the civil rights, social justice, and racial equity of all Native people in all parts of American society.

About "Indian" Sports Mascots & Harm
Born in an era when racism and bigotry were accepted by the dominant culture, "Indian" sports brands have grown to become multi-million dollar franchises.

The intolerance and harm promoted by these “Indian” sports mascots, logos, or symbols, have very real consequences for Native people.

Fighting whites

The Fighting Whites (alternatively identified as Fightin' Whites, Fighting Whities, or Fightin' Whities) were an intramural basketball team formed at the University of Northern Colorado in 2002 and named in response to the Native American mascot controversy.[1]

The intramural college team briefly attracted a storm of national attention because of its satirical protest about stereotypes of Native Americans being used as sports mascots, particularly the "Fightin' Reds" of Eaton High School in Eaton, Colorado, not far from the university in Greeley. The Reds' mascot has been described as "a caricature Indian with a misshapen nose, [wearing] a loincloth and eagle feather".[2]

The intramural team, which included players of Native American, white, Latino, African American, and middle eastern ancestry,[3][4] adopted the name "Fighting Whites", with an accompanying logo of a stereotypical "white man" in a suit,[5] styled after advertising art of the 1950s, as their team mascot. The character has been described as a man from the Ozzie Nelson era[6] or a "Father Knows Best white American male".[7]

At first, the team's T-shirts used "Fightin' Whites" as the name of the team, but various media reports referred to the team as the "Whities" instead of "Whites".[8] The team's popularity skyrocketed. In response to customer demand, the team eventually began selling shirts under both names. The team added the phrase "Fighting the use of Native American stereotypes" to its merchandise to discourage the shirts from being worn by white supremacists, and arranged for CafePress.com to handle manufacturing and sales of the clothing.[9

If people are telling you it is offensive you should probably listen to them.

And unnecessary. I'm on board with it; I just saw Navajo men wearing that cap (ironically, I suppose) and found it interesting.

Gotta love DU; always ready to hammer the nail that sticks up.

Either that or they could go with Tim Tebow.

I prefer either the Washington Potatoes (which will confound Dan Quayle) or the Washington Potomacs (That is probably an Indian tribe’s name).
