Does he consider them to be lazy bums too? Living off the government and giving nothing in return?

(8,377 posts)military pay is taxable like any private sector employment. If that is true, then virtually 100% of the active military personnel would pay some income tax.
If you enlisted in December and had only one month's pay, you might not pay any Federal income tax.

(22,336 posts)and he said that was not uncommon. This has been 15 to 20 years, but I don't think military families are doing better now than then. If 47% of people don't pay federal income taxes, and fewer than 47% of people receive food stamps, it seems like at least a good number of the people on food stamps would not be paying federal income taxes. Hmmm. I need to research.

There are plenty of poor people working however many hours Uncle Sam tells them to work in the Armed Forces. (And no overtime)

(8,377 posts)The personal exemption is 2800. Let's say a military family is husband, wife, and two children. That's deductions of $11,200.
An Army Private makes at least $18,000, so some income tax would be owed unless there are a lot of other deductions.
