"It is a moral issue": Mississippi Baptist Convention on the Confederate flag

This is a huge shift of the polar axis. This group is the most conservative in the State saying that it is time for a change in the state flag.

1. AND now, flying pigs.

I never saw this one coming, but it is good change on at least one issue. So, that's great.

4. The SBC was formed by So slaveholders separating from baptists in North over slavery

It was a fight over Bible interpretation. The Southerners claimed the OT and NT passages mentioning slaves and slavery were to be interpreted literally that God approves slavery. The Northerners claimed that the passages did NOT literally mean God supports slavery

2. At 2017 national convention, SoBaptists fought over whether to condemn wh supremacy

It was quite vehement. A few super respected white leaders in the denomination had to come in and basically force a vote to condemn.

Their pitch?--extremely bad PR for the denomination if they didn't condemn!(Many SoBaptists flatout equate SBC with Christianity. So they heard 'bad PR for christianity )

And not condemning would damage their mission work around the world

There is an article in the June 2017 issue of the Atlantic about the battle and the perceived stakes

3. Considering SBC's support of the NRA and open carry in churches

I never once believed that a moral shift to the left was ever possible, especially in Mississippi

7. Boy, you set up quite the impossible requirement don't you?

They’re trying to move a little. Of course they’re moving from a horrid position but giving them something to move into rather than spitting on them might be worth considering.

8. I should have said preachers.

There is not much oversight at all over SoBapt preachers. Preaching hate from the pulpit has become the norm for way too many of them.

11. I don't want to defend any religious org...

...but due to the 1st amendment, these religious organizations are not regulated by the government as it should be.
