the Libya mess, and esp. his disdain for "the 47%" (which of course includes ALL Obama voters)...what does this say about how they feel about you? Us? Do they agree with Mitt and see us the way he does? Boggles the mind....
I will be really interested in hearing stories here of coming discussions between DUers and their Rep family and friends - how they will gloss over Mitt's words, slurs, and slams. I am pretty lucky - really no close Rep. friends - and family-wise, only my brother. My wife is not so lucky - most of her quilt group is Rep, as is her mother and brother.

(13,462 posts)My husband is a Rep and he convinces himself that his beloved "Party of Reagan" doesn't mean any of these things that rMoney says. He ignores facts and I ignore that he is ignoring facts. We can't control politics so we decided it wasn't worth wrecking our marriage over, even though it's the one thing we disagree completely on. Taken issue by issue he is really more of a moderate Democrat, but won't believe it and we get into a fight and when I bring this up.

(32,701 posts)and I have to agree with one of the guests. Unfortunately, a lot of repubs who are in the 47% don't realize that they're in the 47%. They are in an echo chamber. They think Romney showed leadership when he made his repugnant remarks about "apologizing" to terrorists. They're truly in an alternate universe! Our best hope is if independents are turned off.

Big church goers as well. I can guarantee you they are the talk of their church. On welfare and irresponsible. It's my girlfriends daughter and her husband. If i actually heard either of them proudly declare themselves to be conservatives, I'm likely to smack them down and get myself banned from their house.

They have been brainwashed into believing that those bleeding heart "libruls" want to raise their taxes, take away their guns, abort their babies against their will and give their jobs to illegal immigrants. And that's just for starters. I've been told that liberals are ignorant, arrogant, immoral and unpatriotic.
They really don't like Romney, but the thought of four more years of President Obama strikes them with as much fear and loathing as we felt with GWB. The leaders on the right know what is going on and they use their propaganda machine to keep their base uninformed and fearful.

(14,337 posts)EVERY morning he would watch it. Sometimes he even recorded it. He hasn't since the Democratic Convention. Since it's over, I thought he would put Fox back on. Nope, not at all.
Is he getting fed up with Romney and the Republicans? Does he think they are going to lose? Will this cause him to NOT VOTE AT ALL? He didn't like Bush and sat home for those elections. Could it happen again with Romney? I cannot say for sure, but no vote for Romney is a vote for Obama. That would be fine with me.

(19,841 posts)if you don't share the same politics. It sounds like you don't actually know the reason for his weaning from Fox. Maybe he's trying to kick his addiction.
Shhhhhhh....yeah let him abstain...

(14,755 posts)I think Romney is losing a percentage point or two every time he makes one of these big gaffes. It's people like my Aunt that would probably vote for him, but now will stay home because they aren't excited about him that much; or they really don't care about politics.

(795 posts)It's not a decision you make overnight. It's why I hate when people here use names like "repukes", it pushes people away, that are questioning their own party. I would like to take the opportunity to make them feel welcome.

(29,149 posts)If my mom is undecided she'll ask my opinion, and I'll give my best pitch. But outside of that, discussing politics with my family has usually been a frustrating proposition at best.
Although, oddly enough, I think there is a chance my father, who has probably never voted for a democrat in his life (particularly in a presidential race) will not vote for Mitt. I think he might distrust Mitt's connections to the church, being (a) generally distrustful of Big Religion in politics and (b) specifically resentful of LDS influence in politics and social circles having lived "behind the Zion Curtain" in southern Utah for several years. I doubt we'll talk politics, because are views are opposed and entrenched, but I am a bit curious about his stance on Mitt's candidacy.

(3,784 posts)I would be very interested to see what Rmoney voters would say if we were able to invent a fictional candidate having all the same qualities as Mitt, but with a "D" after his name. You can bet that their criticism of said fictional candidate would be nothing short of brutal.
