DU,
In your lifetime have you seen a worst candidate, one who imploded in front of your face?
I've been alive since 1946 and I can't remember this happening, especially to such a degree and so comically.
Who am I forgetting? Who have been the worst clowns at the head of a national ticket in history?
Surely there must be someone to rival Romney!
Isn't there?

(14,040 posts)I can't think of a more poorly run campaign. You can sell any candidate (re: Shrub) if you have a good campaign.

(10,857 posts)Thomas Eagleton was only one of the disasters and dirty tricks which befell George McGovern in 1972. McGovern's chances were looking poor at best going into the convention, and at least half a dozen prominent Democrats turned McGovern's offers down. By the time he landed on Eagleton, there was little time to do a background check on him.
He lasted as a vice-Presidential pick for a few days or weeks, until it became evident that he suffered from chronic depression and had been through electroconvulsive therapy at least twice. He quickly self-destructed before withering press inquisition and was gone by the beginning of August.

Nixon, not knowing well enough to leave it alone, continued with his election-theft plans....
The differences abound. Eagleton was not the leader on the ticket, and unlike an obviously unqualified running-mate like Sarah Palin, Democrats didn't stick with a sure loser. The fix was in against McGovern that year--Bob Novak played a prominent and highly damaging role--and little was going to change that.
McGovern himself largely escapes blame in retrospect. Romney won't.
