Florida Sheriff floats deputizing all gun owners in county to battle protests

Florida Sheriff floats deputizing all gun owners in county to battle protests
The three minute video is full of the bluster that traditionally plays well in Clay.

A Northeast Florida Sheriff facing a competitive primary used department resources to make a self-promotional video this week under the guise of combatting civil unrest.

The message to would-be protesters: “You’ve been warned.”

(The message to political opponents, meanwhile, is one of the power and prerogatives of incumbency, especially in a crowded field of candidates.)

Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels released Tuesday a red meat video vowing to, if needed, deputize gun owners in the event Black Lives Matter protesters came into the county.

“Somebody has to step up in front of the camera and say ‘enough is enough,'” said Daniels, vowing that “if we can’t handle you …. I’ll make special deputies of every lawful gun owner in this county.”

The warning (not a “threat,” Daniels says repeatedly), is especially interesting, given that Camp Blanding, from which the National Guard could deploy as it did during riots in actual cities, is in the county.

I guess since he has made this call, he can't discriminate and everyone with a gun gets to be deputized!

It doesn't matter if he never actually acts on the threat. Next election, his constituents will remember that he said this, and more of them will vote for him because of it.

The chances BLM protesters show up in rural Clay County are rather slim, but he's staking out the christian law-and-order political platform just in case: "God is raising up men and women just like the folks standing behind me who will have strong backbones and will stand in the gap between lawlessness and the citizenry we’re sworn to protect.”

Daniels is himself under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement related to an affair he had with a fellow officer back when he was at the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and a subsequent false arrest of that officer. Currently Daniels has six challengers in his upcoming re-election bid, he'll probably be out of office soon.

that's my impression of it. pilots, military officers and retirees, lawyers, medical professionals. That's in the more heavily populated area closest to Duval County. Further away it is predominantly rural.

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — A yearlong investigation of Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels may be drawing to a close.

First Coast News has learned from multiple law enforcement sources that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has completed its initial report into misconduct allegations against Clay's top cop. The report is now in the possession of the 4th District State Attorney’s Office, which must review and make recommendations, an FDLE spokesperson confirmed.

The investigation was sparked in May 2019 after Daniels called 911 on his lover of six years, whom he accused of stalking, and asked his own officers to place her under arrest. Cierra Smith was arrested and detained for 6 hours but not jailed after an assistant state attorney found there was no probable cause to book her.

It later emerged that Daniels began his affair with Smith when he was her direct supervisor at the Duval County Jail ...

... Denise Daniels filed the papers Friday in Duval County, noting that the marriage was "irretrievably broken" and that she wants to drop Daniels' last name, according to court records.

Daniels' long-running affair with Cierra Smith, a woman he supervised when he was chief of the jail for the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, became widely known after Daniels accused his ex-lover of stalking.

In early May, Daniels filed a report accusing Smith of having a gun in her car and following him in a "manner that caused him great concern." His deputies resisted an order from Daniels to arrest Smith, citing a lack of probable cause, according to a State Attorney's Office document ...
