The tax code in America produces a FLAT burden. They are ALL LYING
Anytime you hear a Grover Norquist wannabe, or a poorly-equipped Presidential candidate, talk about the tax burden "tolerated" by the 1%, remember that they are lying. Well, that's not fair: they are either lying or terribly misinformed.
The overall revenue burden (the money coming in to the Federal gov't) is essentially FLAT. Everyone pays a share roughly equal to what they make.
Need proof? The super-duper, ultra-lefty commie rag The Economist published this article over the summer: http://www.economist.com/blogs/democracyinamerica/2012/07/taxes-and-rich-0
The biggest takeaway here is that when you hear a person claiming that 47% of Americans don't pay income tax, they are omitting payroll taxes from that number. Downstream, they are also omitting state and local taxes, sales tax, etc. But the important thing is the initial lie.
