I'm guessing his internal polling was showing the same thing, which is why he's now apparently running to be the second president of the Confederacy.
From Gallup:
https://news.gallup.com/poll/313454/trump-job-approval-rating-steady-lower-level.aspx
Region -- January to early May -- Late May to June -- Change
East -- 40 -- 27 -- -13
Midwest -- 51 -- 40 -- -11
South -- 53 -- 48 -- -5
West -- 41 -- 35 -- -6
He desperately needs those Southern states. Even with them, he has little hope of winning. But he has zero chance without them.

(30,613 posts)Put all those traits together in one person though, and he's doing just great with southern white ignorant men. Woohoo - that must be so comforting.

(2,313 posts)They still have him with a 57 percent approval rating among whites with no college degree, and that's down 9 percentage points from January.
That is the only demographic group shown with a percentage higher than 50.

(14,565 posts)Those states are not sensible and not winnable, unless you include Florida and outside chance Georgia.
The Midwestern slide from 51 to 40 is encouraging and vital. He was always being propped up there via approval rating that could have allowed him to steal those same states again.

(24,337 posts)According to the latest polling, Biden is doing better in North Carolina than he is in Ohio
And from my perspective, North Carolina is more important than Ohio because there is a senate race that is very tight
