Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI Just heard again today the Deborah Birx is not a doctor. This has got to stop...
from her Wiki:
From 1980 to 1989, Birx worked as a physician at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.[14] In 1981, Birx completed a one-year internship and did a two-year residency in internal medicine. From 1983 to 1986, she completed two fellowships in clinical immunology in the areas of allergies and diagnostics, where she worked in Anthony Fauci's lab.[4] From 1985 to 1989, Birx was the assistant chief of the Walter Reed Allergy/Immunology Service. Birx started her career as a clinician in immunology, eventually focusing on HIV/AIDS vaccine research.[4][14]
From 1986 to 1989, Birx worked at the National Institutes of Health as an investigator specializing in cellular immunology.[14]
Birx returned to Walter Reed, where from 1989 to 1995 she worked in the Department of Retroviral Research, first as an assistant chief and then as chief of the division. She was lab director in HIV-1 Vaccine Development for a year. Birx became the Director of the United States Military HIV Research Program at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, a position she held for nine years, from 1996 to 2005. In that position, Birx led the HIV vaccine clinical trial of RV 144, the first supporting evidence of any vaccine being effective in lowering the risk of contracting HIV.
No matter what you think about her work as a Trump stooge these days, she's got the background and bona fides for the job. She's just working for the wrong people.
From as far back as winning science fairs in high school, she has been a scientist and researcher. Having Jared and Pence looking over her shoulder and offering their sage advice must behaving its effects. And Trump's medical musings are icing on a very nasty cake.

(7,947 posts)They think that's some kind of slur. Of course, they don't are at all about reality and facts, so they have to be profoundly ignorant that a medical scientist would usually have a PhD (like my aunt, who was a microbiologist and did research on cancer cells), or like Fauci, an MD/PhD.
But in their pathological need to believe Trump is the only perfect one, they have to denigrate real expertise.

(5,754 posts)A PhD doctor. MD PhD is actually Doctor Doctor.

(13,895 posts)Back in the day we called them "Phud MuD's.... PHD's who could not get grant money for their research found out if they had MD after their name the money just flowed in.. They thought MD's were not scientist and their methods antiquated..... HA.. sibling rivalry I guess...

(3,491 posts)Is an M.D. but a complete failure as a person. She is a yellow-bellied, lily-livered Trump sycophant who failed the Anerican people. Its just that simple.

(61,599 posts)The Trump administration has made life difficult for career military and career bureaucrats. They're supposed to serve each administration in an apolitical way. Trump makes that impossible.
Birx is put in an impossible situation. It's easy for us to criticize, but she has a binary choice. She either obeys orders or quits. Do we want her to quit? Who will Trump have then?

(3,256 posts)Her training was in internal medicine and she specialized in immunology. In the public eye a doctor is a doctor, but I see nothing in her experience that she would be a truysted source for epidemiology. The reports of her pushing for reopening suggests she might be guilty of confirmation bias, which we all are prone to. As humans we are always looking for the results we want. I talked to an epidemiologista couple of months ago and was told that mask wearing should probably last at least a year. most epidemiologist come out of public health studies and not medical schools. I can understand why they put MD's out front, but I often wonder where the epidemiology people are in the current shit show.

(43,049 posts)has no formal training in immunology or epidemiology, and just completed an Internal medicine residency. You have to look at someone's career and publications, not just degree and formal training -- at some point its about what you do with your basic training.
I would bet that most research immunologist who have worked in public health for 20 years have at least a master level understanding of epidemiology -- if they haven't produced PhD dissertation worthy publications like Fauci has.

Birx is a doctor just like Ronny Jackson was a doctor when he lied about Trump's health. Birx is a doctor just like Harold Bornstein was a doctor when he let Trump dictate the letter that Bornstein wrote regarding Trump's health. When you are a doctor who lies, your medical credentials mean very little.

The information no doubt influenced many people's view of Dr. Birx. And as noted here, government employees, especially high level often have attachments to the administration in charge.

(9,090 posts)to sk her and the other pros is they saw/heard any evidence trump purposefully delaying action for reasons that might relate to election interference - limbaugh and trump have been and did coordinate to delay action - otherwise limbaugh would not have immediately and consistently called it a hoax.
and in 2014 they used ebola scare as their october surprise to get 9 senate seats. they would easily be stupid enough to think they could manage this similarly - blaming chinese and immigrants etc

(90,669 posts)...she is not a doctor or not a scientist.
When Trump first put her in front of a camera, I am sure she never imagined the pit into which she would fall. Everything Trump Touches Dies.

(37,748 posts)It's of course, important we recognize their contributions, understand someone was breathing over their shoulders and emphatically state in the course of a conversation in regards to them that they were in fact, doctors all... with all due bona fides and background afforded to them.

(6,679 posts)She has the paper on the wall and experience 30 years ago.
In real life she is like the doctor who told my husband that sometimes a man has to hit his wife. I did not find out until much later when he needed to go and said find him a new doc.
Qualified does not equal being in the right. In this moment, she is putting ego above science.
