Birx warns US is 'in a new phase' of coronavirus pandemic with more widespread casesBirx stressed that Americans need to follow health recommendations, including wearing a mask and practicing social distancing.
"To everybody who lives in a rural area, you are not immune or protected from this virus," Birx said. "If you're in multi-generational households, and there's an outbreak in your rural area or in your city, you need to really consider wearing a mask at home, assuming that you're positive, if you have individuals in your households with comorbidities."
"This epidemic right now is different and it's more widespread and it's both rural and urban," she added.

I certainly don't mean to imply that this is good news, but we can recognize some small consolation in that between now and the election those who constitute most of Trump's base will have to directly face the consequences of his incompetence and perhaps reconsider their allegiance.

(10,252 posts)Unless she goes on Faux News with that message, they won't hear it. And even if they hear it somewhere else, they'll blow it off. Unfortunately, for them, not wearing a mask is somehow a symbolic expression about their self-identification as Trumpsters. Their minds are filled with cement.

(21,596 posts)I live in a blue place surrounded by red areas. The red area people come to the blue area to grocery shop and shop at big box stores. I observe them and check out their license plates, and sure enough, most are from surrounding areas.
We have a mandatory mask ordinance in my Georgia community, and, thankfully, many people are complying, however many returning college students and Trumpers are not complying.
When the college students start class at the end of August, theres going to be a massive increase in the number of infections.

(8,090 posts)The city itself is wonderful -- liberal, artistic, hippy dippy, or whatever you want to call it -- and the surrounding areas are VERY rural. I don't know about Texas.

(11,495 posts)of Washington state. We have a state wide mandate to wear masks. Since that went into effect, the vast majority are wearing masks. Walmart is the largest store in the area, and I have only see one or two people not wearing a mask. Safeway seems much better, though I do get there early, and so far I have not seen anyone not waring a mask. An IGA store I seldom go to, I have seen two people each time I go, not the same ones.
I have been to the vets office twice in the last week, and everyone was wearing masks. I have been very surprised this being a red part of the state, but I also have no seen one single trump for president sign.
There are other signs up for local republicans, but not trump. Even in 2016 I only saw two trump signs up, even though he won the county, voter turn out was down.
