Study confirms massive age differences in COVID-19 death rates, middle-aged hit harder than thought

For perspective, the researchers write that a healthy 55-year-old person is 50 times more likely to die from a COVID-19 infection than a car accident

A new global study of COVID-19 death rates confirms that people older than 80 years old are massively more likely to die from the disease and finds that policy responses to protect seniors could save thousands of lives.

The researchers found that people older than 80 years old have a 24 per cent fatality rate and people aged 70 to 79 years old have a four per cent fatality rate.

The study also found that death rates are higher than previously thought for healthy middle-aged adults, with an infection fatality rate of 0.3 per cent for ages 50 to 59 and a fatality rate of one per cent for people aged 60 to 69.

For perspective, the researchers write that a healthy 55-year-old person is 50 times more likely to die from a COVID-19 infection than a car accident.

what is being seen in other hard hit places. The better controlled states have rates in the 0.3-0.5% range.

SARS-COV-2 is like electricity. You can control it by taking wise precautions, but if you make one mistake, it has you.
