Kim Reynolds said Tuesday that students in school districts that hold classes exclusively online without receiving state approval will not receive credit.
The announcement comes one day after two Iowa school districts said they plan to defy the governor's mandate that at least 50% of classes be held in person this fall.
"Schools that choose not to return to school for at least 50% in-person instruction are not defying me, they are defying the law," Reynolds said Tuesday during a press conference.
"If schools move to primarily remote learning without approval, according again to the law, those days do not count toward instructional time."
Reynolds said school administrators could face licensure discipline for violating the order. She did not say that districts could lose out on state funding.
ETA: Apparently, she's really serious about holding on to her position as most unpopular governor! Apparently, she's amused by the idea of killing people while destroying public schools.

They didn't define anything, so it's confusing in its reporting.
I don't know how many actual cases there were.
That number included "exposures".
Not really even sure what that means.

This is attempt to impose hard-right authoritarian power on local governments that traditionally make these decisions.
Bettie
(16,100 posts)because they are large districts.
My kiddo is in a small district and if they choose to go to all in-person (no mask mandates in Iowa), I'll have to pull him out and do an online "homeschool" option, which will have the effect of reducing enrollment in our district.
I think her ultimate goal is the destruction of public schools and the small ones will be the first to go. My older two had under 50 in their graduating classes.

(58,785 posts)have the option of home schooling, and in the process slapping back. It's a big task to take on, of course, and hope your district doesn't have to give up virtual.

(12,712 posts)Unless I missed something, every attempt to reopen anything has turned out to be a huge mistake as far as spreading and case/death increases go, and that's even true in some other countries that have been more careful and concerned than the Drumpfomania in America.
Maybe I missed the reopening here in the that didn't turn out to be regrettable and a contribution to the quick ride to exponential growth we are on? If you wanted to fast-track C19, you would continue this way. That's a catastrophe in progress.
It's cruel, insane and counterproductive to put that kind of pressure on the school systems, teachers and students when you can be sure that the schools that reopen will be closing down within a few weeks or so AFTER being super spreader vector events.
Forcing anyone to put themselves in harms way when there is a demonstrable and obvious reason not to is a complete travesty and unforgivable.

(16,100 posts)people don't even have a clue how any of this is supposed to work.
Remember, Schools can only close if the entire county's positive rate is 15% or higher or absenteeism is at least 10% and then, they can request it, but only for two weeks.
So, if there is an outbreak, it depends on how many tests county-wide are positive and the request has to be processed by the governor's office and either approved or not. How long that will take is anyone's guess.
Meanwhile, my older two kids are going to UNI where they are not required to have a test before going, so I figure they'll be back home in a month at the most...unless this also applies to the state universities.
This year needs to end. I'm already near the end of my rope.

(16,100 posts)Schools can apply to go to all online IF the countywide positive test percentage goes to 15% (that's apply) for a two week shut-down.
They can also apply if there is more than a 10% absentee rate due to illness.
Then, they have to wait for their application to be either approved or denied.
I'm guessing denial for all of them is the plan.
