Woman charged with assault after mask dispute at Staples leaves customer with broken leg

Police in New Jersey have arrested the woman they said was involved in a mask dispute at a Staples store last week that left a customer with a broken leg.

Terri Thomas, 25, was arrested Tuesday and charged with second-degree aggravated assault, Hackensack police said in a news release.

Thomas was released on a summons pending a first court appearance on Aug. 24. She could not immediately be reached for comment.

Margot Kagan, 54, of Teaneck, told police she was using a fax machine at a Staples store in Hackensack last Wednesday, when a woman, identified by police as Thomas, approached a machine next to her with a mask pulled down below her mouth.

Kagan, who, according to police, had a liver transplant four months ago and was walking with a cane, told Thomas to put her mask on, which police said angered Thomas.

Police said Thomas yelled at Kagan and then violently threw her to the ground.

was using a cane. My guess is once the woman started toward her, she put up the cane to protect herself. It may look elastic due to light effects and the woman holding it moving away from the attacker.

"The suspect became angry and yelled at the victim, who picked up her walking cane and pointed it directly at the suspect, coming within inches of the suspect's chest," said Capt. Darrin DeWitt, a detective with the Hackensack Police Department.

It shows that Ms Thomas approached Ms Kagan as Ms Kagan was using the machine. So not only was Ms Thomas not wearing her mask correctly, she was not social distancing. I think Ms Kagan used her cane to attempt to get Ms Thomas to move away from her. That's when Ms Thomas grabs Ms Kagan and threw her to the ground.

The longer video shows a woman at machine next to the one Ms Kagan had been using, who does not react at all to the battery. Then Ms Thomas walks past, completely ignoring Ms Kagan still on the ground with a broken leg. What callous people, Ms Thomas and the woman at the machine next over!

Margot Kagan's head came so close to crashing into the counter. Having been slung that hard, she could have been killed. As it is, the germ sharing involved in attacking her should also be considered assault charges.

It's ridiculous that there isn't more pushback from authorities -- communities need to start charging and jailing people for this kind of behavior or it will keep ramping up. Why do people do this over a mask? I just don't get it.

This is an absolute atrocity. Hard to believe she is allowed to walk free while Margot is getting plates in her legs so she can maybe walk again. She should be jailed and left there to rot as an example to others.
