I'm reminded of how fifty years ago people my age would say, "Social Security won't be around when I retire" and it made me batshit crazy. I'd tell them that if you buy into that idea, you make it easy for the Social Security haters to do away with it. I tell young people the same thing.

He will leave. He will have no choice. The Secret Service will see to that. Saying he won't leave gives validity to something that is simply not valid.

And if he does everything and including the kitchen sink....Pelosi becomes President.

It's over....unless we fuck up again.

But..."he won't leave" does make for good ratings.

all of this is supposed to be in furtherance of helping us to "be on guard"
and blah, blah-bla, blah-bla
and -- don't know about you -- but I don't have a lot of "juice" or persuasion when it comes to the Justice Department or the federal courts -- so "being on guard" really kind of means f**k-all to the average voter.

so -- if you have access to (and funding for) a legal team that is all prepared to spring into action on Nov 4th -- go for it buddy! Otherwise -- you're just nattering around pointlessly, and Chicken Littling away a lot of my (and everyone else's) time.

Given the very real legal problems Trump faces if he loses the protections of the presidency, and what hold Russia has over him (also has to be very real), we have to be aware of, and ready for, this possibility.

What occurs to me that we do know is:

1. Russia's involvement would be a very risky move for Putin and the oligarchs supporting him, designed to create chaos even if it didn't save their asset's position. Risky because there would be very big American backlash if they lost.

2. It could not be legal, in any way, and we have enormous resources on our side. It's the trumpists/RW who have the weaker position by far. That's in addition to the people who would be marching on Washington and literally hundreds of federal buildings around the nation.

3. Trump's a coward. "Brave" only when he believes he's safe and believes he'll win. He's trapped in a corner, but he's by nature very buyable and Democrats can offer him a way out, including negating consequences in America of whatever Russia might have on him.

Btw, Clint Watts said we should see indications of which course Russia has chosen by early October. And that should be a big indicator of what course the Republicans/trumpists take. As Rachel says, "Watch this space."

It's different if they are actually talking about foreign interference into the election and the reasons Trump is cheating to try to win.

But they are not doing those things. They are just making it as if it's up to him.

No to head in sand. It's also possible that in their way they may be trying to warn without distracting from the biggest threat to our democracy by far: its own people.

Without internal threats, we'd have already smashed pissant little Russia's aggressions.

fucking know Trump will do all he can to cheat and the media should report that.

But instead they are just making it seem as if he has the power to leave on his own and none of that has anything to do with cheating or him wanting to protect himself from being charged for any of his crimes.

Come on. That's like complaining that you don't like the pattern of the dishes while chowing down poison.

Discuss BOTH. The OP wants to discuss neither, but this issue seems not to have been thought through and can't just be wished away. Trump, Repubs, Russians, dominionist Christians, kleptocrats, white nationalists would love the possibility to be dismissed and no longer worried about.

Clint Watts discussing possible actions Russia may take now that the social media manipulation that worked so well in 2016 is not doing the job. The very real danger to Putin and his oligarchs personally and to their ambitions if Biden/Democrats are elected is a given.

Simultaneously, they could instigate witting and unwitting allies in America to storm polling places, incite violence or contest election results—Kremlin operatives were connected to a similar scenario during Montenegro’s 2016 parliamentary election.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin may overtly encourage President Trump to remain in the White House post-inauguration even if defeated in November. Kremlin trolls would amplify all such chaos on social media and confuse the American public, helping to shatter voter confidence in the true outcome of the election.

For Russia, this would be a bold maneuver, one that would necessitate an American response that could be very costly over the long term. But Putin might feel just emboldened enough to pursue it, depending on a mix of domestic and international factors. In the latter doomsday scenario, if 2020 goes like 2016, we should watch for the Kremlin to signal its chosen course of action in early October, roughly a month before votes are cast.
