Hoodwinked: Romney Campaign Does NOT have the Money they trumpeted

Daily Kos

Surprised? Naw. The emperor REALLY has no clothes. Many of us have suspected that the pom pom festooned announcements each month about "huge money haul" was all hooey. Now we know. Romney's campaign does not have the money we've been made to think they have. New York Times reports:

Romney aides released informal dollar figures that lumped several pools of money — some available for his use, others not — into a single figure, providing a perception greater than reality: $106 million in June and $101 million in July, far more than Mr. Obama and the Democrats.

Yet those figures obscured the fact that most of the money Mr. Romney was raising was reserved for those other political entities like the Republican National Committee.

With the debacle unfolding this week, members of his own party have screamed for Romney to get off the fundraising trail and get to actual campaigning. Now we know why. His campaign is in debt and he doesn't have the money to run a full fledged campaign, that he advertised they had.

<...>

He's been raising money alright, but it's coming from few donors who are maxing out to his campaign, the RNC, and the Republican Governors Association. This bundling of different kinds of monies into headline-grabbing newsbuzz intended to capture the news cycle, impress corporate journos, and intimidate Democrats, but the campaign itself can use only so little of this money.

I was discussing this story with my son earlier. We agreed that this is the behavior of a businessman who cooks the books of a corporation in order to make it more attractive to investors.

In this case, the investors are the potential donors, and Romney needs to convince them that his campaign is a good investment so they won't get skittish and start hedging their bets by donating to the Democrats.

But that raises another question. What is he selling to those investors? Presumably the things we already know about -- tax cuts, deregulation, and the right to loot Social Security and Medicare.

In other words, he's doing exactly what he accused Obama of doing -- buying the loyalty of voters by promising to give them free stuff.

Only with Romney, you and I are the free stuff he's giving away.

No wonder he's been avoiding campaign appearances and stumbles over himself when he tries to deal with the public. Even the slave trader gets a little awkward when dealing with the potential slaves.

It's all over for Romney and the Dodgers*. Each had a half decent run this season but they're both 9 & 1/2 games behind and the season ends next week.

Yet Romney will continue to make his bid. Even while knowing it will fail he must complete the charade. If only to satisfy those who make money off the dim-witted GOP donor. It's big business to rip off the gullible Republican. Ask me about it sometime. I know first hand.

*And with apologies in advance to L/A fans. No moral comparison meant. Remember, you couldn't have the Dodgers w/out the Giants winning once in a while. And the Giants best friend is Tommy Lasorda.

Excuse my digression

I keep thinking, "I've got to get to DU to see what Romney did or said".

What ever it is, it's going to be something.

This will be used in history classes for years to come as an example of the most wacked campaign ever.

The federal laws STILL say that as an individual, you max at $2500 for a primary season and $2500 for a general election season. Anything OVER those amounts (from individuals) must be designated to go elsewhere (usually default to the DNC or RNC).

So with many many MORE "individuals" that the OFA has reached out to vs the big ticket, $50,000/plate donors, President Obama can get more bang for the buck over time because the bucks can continue to trickle in vs getting dumped all at once and then nothing from those individuals the rest of the election. And in this case, the RNC is raking it in but not Rmoney as a candidate.

People thought that Romney was saving his cash for a huge ad blitz in the last couple weeks. That was the belief after he didn't run ads in many swing states. Now we know the real reason.
