I've been hearing that word "bubble" lately. I'm not sure I even understand what the word means, but I'm guessing from the context that it refers to a means of coping with and preventing the virus from getting loose in certain groups of people who are engaged in a common activity. I heard that word mentioned a few days ago in connection with the NBA, for example. But the word wasn't explained or defined, just mentioned in passing, and I had to guess as to its meaning from the context. Does the word mean that NBA players, coaches and officials are living in a "bubble" within which they are not having any contact with the outside world, so that none of them get the virus? And thus, they are able to play safely.
If this is what the word means, I wonder if "bubbles" are in our future and they're how we're all going to have to live, if there is never an effective and widely available vaccine? I love classical music and I'm listening to Mahler's 4th symphony now as I type this, 57 minutes of heavenly bliss! But it's a recording on YouTube of a 2014 performance. There are several dozen musicians crowded almost elbow-to-elbow in that orchestra, and there is no way they could do that safely now. So is this the end of large orchestras, or will they eventually start living together in isolated "bubbles" so they can play their music?
Are we all going to have to live in "bubbles" so we can live our lives and do our thing safely?
Are "bubbles" in our future?

If they let go, the tiger will devour them.
I am staying out of cash, and all my money is in house and stocks. US dollar is tanking fast.
Wonder what the gov't will do when inflation rears its ugly head? They have no more arrows left in the quiver.

From Deadline https://deadline.com/2020/07/tyler-perry-production-atlanta-sistas-the-oval-quarantine-bubble-1202998473/
Tyler Perry was one of the first Hollywood producers to come up with a comprehensive plan to safely restart TV production back in April. Now he is the first to have completed a full season of a primetime scripted series filmed during the pandemic using COVID-19 safety protocols. It is Season 2 of his BET show Sistas, which recently wrapped production at the Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta and will be ready for a fall debut.
SNIP
As we have reported, Perry employs a quarantine bubble model, sequestering cast and crew on the lot for the duration of a shoot. In May, he sent out a 30-page document to his casts outlining the plan in great detail.
Perry said he and his team followed that document to the letter, and it worked. (You can watch a behind-the-scenes video of the process and the accommodations on Sistas below.) He will use the exact same protocols for The Oval and two other shows he has lined up at the studio one after the other through September: Bruh and Ruthless, both for BET+.

(182,788 posts)Okay. If you can get everyone in there and no one is sick for 2 weeks I guess you are okay.
The thing hardly anyone is mentioning is sex. The NBA is without their wives at least. Those guys are party time everywhere they go. Baseball players too. I did read one article on ESPN in which one baseball person said all its going to take is one horny guy.
I thought the NBA was taking the whole family in but apparently not. These people (and theres as much support as there are players in basketball) must miss their kids a lot. Plays they are used to doing whatever they What whenever they want.

(16,646 posts)I suspect it is an allusion to these children that were forced to live in literal "bubble rooms" because of compromised immune systems.
I share the suspicion that these bubbles can't last for long. But the NBA, the PGA, and the theme parks seem to have gotten away with it for a short period of time. But I think you may see going forward variations on the theme for some time. Once more rapid and accurate testing is available (an assumption) then bubbles will be created that along with a vaccine and highly effective treatment, will allow bigger and bigger bubbles to created and maintained.

(182,788 posts)The idea of a bubble, to answer your question, is take take everyone you need into a controlled environment. For an NBA team thats about 28 people per team. No one in or out without testing and quarantine. Initially everyone distances and tests a lot. After 2 weeks they determined it was safe and they could start practicing. For food (most of these guys have their own chef) its probably delivered like a restaurant and prepared by people who dont leave the bubble. No family. No wives or girlfriends - that whew thats got to be tough. They have taken over Disney resorts and pretty much have them exclusively to themselves I think.
Pro soccer in the US like wise bubbled somewhere in Florida.
Golf is moving players and caddies in private planes. Im guessing training and massage staff too. Living in houses. Again these guys are not used to this. They each have their own entourage and own little kingdom during the week.
Baseball is not really bubbling and they are having the expected results.
Not sure about hockey other than that they are staying in Canada playing only in Edmonton and Toronto. I think the teams are staying in each city.

(89 posts)At the start of the pandemic we were restricted to our "primary bubble": the people living at your address. So even your children, parents, friends... were not allowed to visit you.
Later on we were allowed to "adopt" a number of people into the bubble (5, 10, 15) but now it is more restricted again.
Now the rule is: "Each family (or anyone living together with others) may meet up with a maximum of 5 people. These must always be the same people"
So these are the only people you can meat without keeping distance or wearing a mask.
