(1,656 posts)as he sees potential complications with his chance for successful presidential run with Harris as a sitting VP.

(6,137 posts)Can Newsom appoint himself to senator?
Although, I think Kamala should be replaced by another diverse woman. We need representation any chance we get. Hispanic woman? Who is the most qualified in CA gov?

(3,635 posts)pretty sure Kamala would approve of such a pick.

(9,073 posts)Her seat will most likely be open in '24. I think that's his logical next step.
But you're right. As far as the presidency goes, I don't see him entering a primary against Harris. His most workable path to that would be if Harris runs in '24 and loses, and he goes for '28.
I honestly don't see Biden running in '24. Of course, he'll never say that, but I think a lot of people have it on their minds.

(32,017 posts)I thought he declared that he would only serve one term. I think that is a political mistake, personally, but I am almost certain that he said it. Cant find a link at the moment. Sorry.

Sympthsical
(9,073 posts)If he had, there'd be a lot more chatter about it at the moment.
Were he to announce something like that, he'd lame duck himself. It'd be a huge mistake.
But I think most of us are sort of assuming it.
Laelth
(32,017 posts)But I could have sworn that Biden suggested it, at least. I hope I am wrong.

Cha
(297,220 posts)that Biden was asked if he would only run for one term and he said "No".
But of course things can change.

(10,885 posts)https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/biden-promises-one-term-presidency-if-his-energy-and-mental-acuity-decline
A voter at a CNN town hall in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Thursday night asked the former vice president, 77, if he would commit to serving only one term.
"No, I wouldn't do that, but, I tell you what, you're going to be able to make a judgment," Biden said. "And, by the way, the two youngest people on the stage now are me and Buttigieg," he joked, referring to 38-year-old former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, the youngest candidate in the race.
Biden said, however, that he would not seek a second term if his health declined.
"I'm in pretty good health, but, look, I guarantee you this: If anything changed in my health, making it incapable for me to fully exert all the energy and mental acuity that was needed to be done, then I give you my word: I would not run again," Biden said.
If elected, Biden would be the oldest president in history. President Ronald Reagan, the current record-holder, was 77 when he left office.
Biden explained that part of his reasoning for not committing to one term was because it would make it harder to accomplish policy goals.
"Look, anybody who starts off saying, 'I'm only going to serve one term,' is already behind the eight ball because then you're a one-term president, and no one worries about what the hell's going to happen after that," Biden said.

(36,745 posts)Which is fine. This country has had many one term presidents.
John Adams, James Polk, Martin Van Buren, Franklin Pierce, etc, etc.

(13,041 posts)given the VEEP will be next in line for 2024. Makes sense given his age. I believe Kamala's selection was strategic in many many ways. She, now at 55, is the heir apparent for 2024.

(3,261 posts)I can see a lot of different permutations and combinations that keep a presidential run open to him. As much as I would love it, 16 years of Biden/Harris is unlikely.

(16,685 posts)Her congressional district is pretty marginal. Who could replace her?
roamer65
(36,745 posts)He would be a great Senator, but would probably only serve the 2 years remaining in the term. That would leave the 2022 race wide open for her seat.
Jerry wanted to be a Senator, running for the office in 1982.

(14,853 posts)Years ago, I told a Republican coworker that I liked him even when he was pushing a flat-tax idea because he'd probably at least do it honestly. (The coworker had mentioned flat-taxes because some Republicans were later pushing the idea.)
He scoffed as soon as I mentioned his name, calling him "Governor Moonbeam" or whatever. So I asked him why he specifically didn't like him, rather than just name-calling, and he gave me one of the most head-scratching replies that I ever heard! "He dated Linda Ronstadt!"
WTF?! I still don't understand that reply!
roamer65
(36,745 posts)Gee, and what do we do now? TV networks use broadcast satellites for town halls.
Jerry Brown is a smart, visionary person.

(14,853 posts)Seemed willing to seek solutions "outside the box".
You don't happen to understand the weird Linda Ronstadt reply from that guy, do you? He didn't answer when I asked, "And?! Why does that matter?!"
I was still a kid when they had dated (whereas the Republican coworker was an adult by the early 60's), but I never heard any rumors of her condoning cannibalism of children or something! What a weird reply from that guy. (Maybe it was racism? No idea.)

(36,745 posts)Jerry refused to live in the governors mansion. From what I read, he had a simple apartment. Very practical and unassuming person I have heard. He also refused the chauffeured governors limousine and drove himself around in a regular looking state car.

Barbara Boxer would make more sense if they just wanted someone there that isn't going to run until they can get a replacement through election.
