In the graphics below, explore the trend in new cases in your state to see whether cases are rising, falling or staying level. You can view the data via a heat map (immediately below), a curve chart and a table with details on each state's case trends over the last three weeks. (14,853 posts)Coincides with the mask mandate.
No idea what's happening in Hawaii. Already noticed that Ohio had a lower infection rate than them now, after Hawaii was doing better than any USA states for months.

(14,853 posts)That seems to be what this recent story implies.

The AlohA State was seen as an example in the United States when it comes to the outbreak of COVID-19 the numbers of infections are spreading now throughout all communities, just 3-4 weeks after the State partially opened.
Tourism was never implemented again, requiring visitors to stay in hotel rooms for a mandatory 2 weeks quarantine.

The Big Island has had no fatalities, either.. only Maui with 6 so far.

(57,073 posts)Are people wearing masks there?
Many are not masking here. But I'm currently in redneck TN. So, sadly, to be expected.

(14,853 posts)Most people in my area didn't wear masks until the Ohio mandate, but now everybody (that I've seen) where's a mask in public.
I'm pretty sure Hawaii had that mandate months ago.
Edit: And there's rednecks here too, among others. Pretty much all types mixed together around here.
SheltieLover
(57,073 posts)But Memphis & the county (Shelby) have mandatory mask requirements & knuckle dragging tRumpers do not comply.
Mandates have no teeth. Should be a huge fine, at the least, in my opinion.
I think gov recommended masks, but is such repuke scum he would not mandate masks.
Even WH task force warned TN a few days ago to mandate masks.
Gov & GA too busy in special session trying to outlaw liability fpr exposure & discussing "how to deal with protesters." 🤬
Repukes are always reactionary, rather than proactive.
Buckeye_Democrat
(14,853 posts)I still suspect that a statewide mandate would help, though. When it was a piecemeal approach here, I didn't see so much compliance. My county had a mandate before it was statewide, and more people seemed to be ignoring it at that time.
SheltieLover
(57,073 posts)I just don't see gov lee issuing mandate.
They seem to want us all debilitated or dead, so no mask mandate here. 🤬
I'm glad the one in your area helped!
Buckeye_Democrat
(14,853 posts)... to the Trump bullies many weeks ago after he initially mandated it, or we'd surely be in even better shape now.
Better to have a GOP worm than a hard-liner, though. Lol.

(30,540 posts)with that whole thing, seems like someone has been screwing around with the numbers.

(1,850 posts)About how the data, which comes from Johns Hopkins, is color coded on chart and map.
Their chart gives 4 weeks worth of data per state, reporting average daily cases per week.
If the current week is lower than last week they color it green.
Despite the largely green map showing numbers decreasing, I see about 20 states actually have numbers higher than they were 3 weeks ago, but lower than last week.
The trends over these past months have been up up down up down up up.
Just comparing last week to this week can be misleading when looking at trends.
Here's an example:
3 weeks ago * 2 weeks ago * last week * this week
New Jersey: 200 * 407 * 400 * 345
They have more cases than they did 3 weeks ago, but are coded green
When I review the data per state, I look at 3 weeks ago and at current week.
4 weeks of a state showing declining numbers is encouraging.
But any fluctuations indicate numbers are not necessarily declining, they are fluctuating and don't indicate a trend in either direction.
I do love that they give 4 weeks of data. But as I stated above, it's misleading to label green decline when it's only considering last week to this week.
On the bright side, the overall total US numbers are declining, showing a downward trend.
67,217* 65,094 * 60,458 * 54,409 (numbers for this week will change by week's end)
I really appreciate the 4 weeks of data NPR provides. I just take exception to the color coding of that data bases on only the last and current week.
(A bit of a geek, I have a graduate degree in applied research and statistics, so I look at the numbers for entertainment.)
SheltieLover
(57,073 posts)I never would have picked up on that! 😊
I do like the #s though! Nice to have them all in one place in a chart!

(1,850 posts)Looks like they are now using cases per hundred thousand as a measure.
The map that looked green yesterday is now mostly yellow and red.
Just because cases are dropping, that doesn't mean there's low risk.
Very interesting development. I approve.
