Infectious Disease Expert Predicts When U.S. Coronavirus Cases Will Again Explode

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/michael-osterholm-coronavirus-prediction-september_n_5f323fd3c5b64cc99fdd8601

Infectious disease expert Michael Osterholm on Monday contradicted President Donald Trump’s fanciful claim that the U.S. will soon be in “very good shape” with the coronavirus pandemic, instead predicting “an explosion” in new cases starting next month.

Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told CNN’s Don Lemon that the U.S. is “just really beginning to get to the really large part of the problem” with an average of 45,000 to 50,000 new confirmed cases of the virus per day.

“When school starts both at the high school level and in college and universities, we think we’re going to see an explosion of cases in September that will far surpass what we saw after Memorial Day,” Osterholm said. “And that this is just going to continue increasing, getting higher and higher, in terms of numbers.”

Osterholm elaborated in an op-ed he wrote with Neel Kashkari, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, that was published in The New York Times on Friday. The column argued the U.S. needs another lockdown to slow the spread of the virus.

This is what happens after years of Health Care Privatization. Many of her fellow Health Care acquaintances are in total frustration with the testing and the lack there of.

shutting down again due to lack of customers/traffic.

They are realizing that it is cost prohibited to keep a business open without a sufficient amount of customers. Not only do they have to maintain a staff of employees to be ready to serve potential customers but - restaurants in particular - are finding out that they have a hard time dealing with having to predict how much food they need to have on hand and many are wasting food as it goes bad.

This is not to mention the additional costs incurred by having to maintain a sanitized environment at all times; having to contend with social distancing guidelines and limitations of the percentage of customers that they can serve and curfews imposed in some States.

As businesses come to the realization that they are not making money by re-opening - many will reach the decision that they will shut down again. That would also have an impact again on the unemployment numbers.

We'll also see and experience similar things happening in the re-opening of the schools. As students return to their schools - we should anticipate a rise in new Covid positive cases and additional costs in keeping schools sanitized. Those school districts will have to evaluate their decisions for re-opening and we should anticipate a number of school districts closing down again and going to a virtual platform.

This is what we'll continue to face until there is a National Plan to attack this virus. My opinion is that we have to come to the realization that this country will have to shut down again in order to finally realize some control over this virus.
