USPS is removing mail boxes from Oregon

VERIFY: Are USPS mailboxes being removed from Portland streets?
A Northeast Portland resident spotted a worker removing mailboxes earlier this month. USPS confirmed they're removing some mailboxes.

Updated: 9:01 PM CDT August 13, 2020

PORTLAND, Ore. — Several Portland viewers contacted KGW on Aug. 13 after several Twitter and Facebook posts went viral of someone removing U.S. Postal Service (USPS) mailboxes earlier in the week.
KGW has confirmed with a USPS spokesperson four boxes have been removed from Portland streets, and 27 others have been removed from Eugene.

They say the boxes are being moved from locations that have multiple mailboxes right next to each other. The spokesperson added there has been a decline in first class mail volume since the pandemic began, and confirmed to Willamette Week the order came from USPS headquarters last week.

An image of a worker removing a mailbox went viral on social media this week. It was taken by Mark Delaney at Northeast Sacramento Street and 70th Avenue on Saturday, Aug. 8.

More mailboxes will likely be removed next week, though it's unknown where those boxes are and when they'll be removed, according to the USPS spokesperson.

Thursday morning, President Donald Trump admitted he wants to block money from the U.S. Postal Service, in an effort to make it harder to process mail-in ballots during the November 2020 election.

Rupert said some locations that had side-by-side mailboxes were being consolidated with only one mailbox but added that “every location that had a collection box will keep a collection box.”

“This is a normal operational procedure to make sure the majority of our boxes are in in high traffic areas and convenient for customers. Additionally, we still have carriers come to every single home six days a week and they collect any outgoing mail that is available,” he said. “We are the most trusted Federal organization and the most trusted brand in America. We take that trust very seriously and the Postal Service is fully committed to serving Oregon.”

slow down of mail services, the pickups may be late and the ne mail box could be full and you can't mail your ballot.

In my opinion there was no need to remove the extra boxes - they were already cemented down in the location and not interfering with anyone/anything. Pure voter suppression.

No reason they couldn't have left them there until after November.

If not some people without a car might have had one of those mail boxes a block away.

it will not be removed.

Everything is not a conspiracy, although I know it seems like it with trump.

doesn't sound like some nefarious plan. Plus, Oregon has ballot drop boxes.

to the truth than if we gave them the benefit of the doubt. This particular case may be as USPS says, but the starting point of discussion SHOULD BE: GIVEN ALL THAT WE KNOW ABOUT HOW THE WH HAS TWISTED GOVT TO THEIR OWN POLITICAL AND PERSONAL ENDS AND GIVEN ALL ELSE WE KNOW ABOUT SABOTAGING THE POST OFFICE, THIS SMELLS.

Post offices should be aware of how this looks and should have waited till after the election. Unless, of course, they need to do it before the election per a not so well hidden agenda.

We should also demand to know if this is happening everywhere and if so, how many mailboxes are being removed in historically dem areas compared to red areas?

So it probably makes sense that the hours of the post office are being cut on September 1. It used to stay open until about 4:45, I think, with a break for lunch. As of September 1, their hours of operation will be 9:00 a.m. through 12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Again, we've been out of the building since mid-March.

of them being removed in Montana and NYC. To be fair though, they removed the majority of them in my neighborhood years ago, and the only one left nearby is painted green and used as a drop box by the carriers.
