saying it was being used 'to perpetuate racism and xenophobia'Newsweek apologized on Friday for an op-ed questioning Kamala Harris' eligibility to be vice president, saying that it was "being used by some as a tool to perpetuate racism and xenophobia." The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden picked Harris to be his running mate last week.
The magazine was hit with criticism for pushing a racist "birther" conspiracy after publishing the piece on Wednesday by conservative law professor John Eastman. Eastman falsely argued that Harris whose mother and father emigrated from India and Jamaica, respectively "may not be subject to the complete jurisdiction" of the US, even though she was born in California and is undeniably a US citizen under the Fourteenth Amendment.
"The op-ed was never intended to spark or to take part in the racist lie of Birtherism, the conspiracy theory aimed at delegitimizing Barack Obama, but we should have recognized the potential, even probability, that that could happen," the note said.
Newsweek's opinion editor Josh Hammer and global editor-in-chief Nancy Cooper added the editor's note to the top of the op-ed. It notes that "many readers have demanded that we retract the essay, but we believe in being transparent."

(1,474 posts)They never intended for the article which theorizes that Harris is not an American citizen and therefore is illegally in the Senate to be in any way associated with birtherism.
That's some Bari Weiss levels of bullshit right there.

(52,392 posts)They're saying the editorial is being used "used by some" to further racism and that it was "never intended" to to promote birtherism.
They're still trying to pretend that there was some legitimacy to the editorial. It's a "sorry if you were offended" non-apology.
How can they seriously pretend this had nothing to do with birtheracism?

(7,813 posts)Anybody with 2 surviving brain cells would see at once that was exactly what it was. Newsweek is playing coy with what they did.
My own Newsweek story: about 30 years ago, I subscribed to Newsweek. My last name is very unusual (most people have never heard of it, even in the country of origin), so misspelling and mispronunciation happens more than getting it right. I noticed that Newsweek came up with a new and interesting variation: the letter K was doubled. No biggie. I was getting my magazine every week and all was well.
Then, I started getting deluged with spam mail with the same misspelling. They sold my name to every sort of scammer there was. I was getting mail from time share sellers, offers for mobility scooters that Medicare would pay for (I was in my early 30s and perfectly mobile without help), Publishers Clearinghouse, you name the unwanted mail, I got it for the next 3 years.
Fuck Newsweek.

(53,925 posts)Even grade schoolers know if you're born in any of the fifty states you're a natural born citizen no matter who your parents are or where they are from.
And then the "we believe in transparency" remark...apparently so as your leaving the article up clearly demonstrates.
