Twitter question

I understand how celebrities can get huge followings but it seems some non celebrities have huge followings. What is the mechanism?

1. Be interesting, or at the very least be interesting once.

Seems to be all it takes.

2. A circle of friends on social media, retweeting socially relevant content, replying to tweets,

following others during follow campaigns, posting YouTube videos with your twitter profile included, FaceBook Groups, Instagram and getting lucky are my best guess.

I worked with a young guy who was constantly trying to build his followers and he was on the phone constantly tweeting, using facebook, instagram, etc...

3. You can pay a company to get more followers

That is one reason I just am not into twitter much.

I know you can hire companies that will send bots after your twitter account to re-tweet, to add fake followers, etc.
