This doesnt sound like a man whos going to go quietly. Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko warned protesters Monday that he will not give in to their demands for a new presidential electionunless they assassinate him.
Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in the capital city of Minsk over the weekend to protest against the disputed elections held earlier this month. Protesters have been infuriated by alleged poll-rigging and police violence at the ensuing protests, but Lukashenko has defied any suggestion that the vote could be re-run.
We held elections already. Until you kill me, there will be no other elections, he was quoted by Belarusian media as saying during a visit to a tractor plant Monday morning. You should never expect me to do something under pressure... They [new elections] wont happen.
Lukashenko did appear to suggest that he would consider some kind of constitutional reform or even power-sharing but insisted his hand would not be forced by the protests.

(6,395 posts)Russia is the one who takes out Lukashenko. After all, they have been the ones undermining him as of late. Install a technocrat temporarily, energy prices go back down, provide their COVID vaccine for free, etc. A new election, the technocrat wins....then merges the country with Russia.
Lukashenko was very interested in re-integrating with Russia...until it dawned on him that he had no chance of becoming a Russian President when Putin proved he wasn't the push over everyone thought he was (a mediocre KGB agent, mild mannered mayor of St. Petersburg, etc. and with certain western intelligence agencies, gave Yelstin their blessing to make him VP as they felt he could be controlled, etc. Talk about when those intelligence operations really backfire...this is up there with Iran).
And the icing on the cake, no sanctions. As Russia got rid of a dictator. Of course there is more that is possible....but as the great Jedi Yoda once said, "Difficult to tell, always in motion is the future".
Oh but there is one thing that's certain. The USA and Britain will have no say so in this, no thanks to Trump...and his doppelganger in London.

I kind of hoping he is looking at a Ceausescu situation there. As I am here.
