We're used to seeing the diversity of those attending Democratic conventions -- and that's a great thing -- but seeing that diversity in closeups, especially when those diverse people are delivering messages, is more powerful on TV.
And it helped immensely that we weren't getting lots of commentary from journalists and pundits in delays between speeches. With both the delays and the commentary watering down the impact of the speeches.
Tonight was like a very effective, hours-long ad for the Democratic Party and Biden-Harris.
Kudos -- and congrats -- to everyone who worked on and contributed to this first night of the convention!

(22,264 posts)plus I had to cool down from spending 3 hours in the heat, taking census.
I was hot but it was way better than the past week when it was 104 to 106.
What I saw was spot on.
I think it is a really good format since we don't have exciting roll calls and all night suspense like we used to.

(42,572 posts)would have taken much longer at a regular convention because she would have been constantly interrupted with applause and ovations. That pundit was saying it like it was unfortunate. I think that was a plus. I'm liking the virtual format.

(15,286 posts)Eva Longoria Bastos was excellent as MC, imho. Each speech seemed to have a little more gravitas without the audience and applause. A series of mini-Oval Office type addresses, if you will.
