Michelle Obama makes me proud to be a Citizen.
Let's do this !

(7,017 posts)Much better than live in person events in the past. I always hated the circus and silly behavior the constant applause. Speakers message came through loud and clear, made me pay attention. Loved it.

(11,885 posts)And the election will be a runaway for Biden/Harris , and growing more every day trump tweets or speaks. The GOP see this too, so are they thinking about dumping trump? As more exposes him I think they might, to save themselves.

(10,952 posts)I don't know who the Democrats worked with but they put on an amazing virtual convention last night. I actually liked it better then a live convention. They came across as a unified party with one mission - put Joe Biden in the White House and take back our country. They were focused, diversified, unifying (i.e. out tent is big enough to include everyone while we work hard to put our country back together again), and the time has come to change. There was no negative drama.
I loved the use of everyday people to show how Trump's Presidency has ruined people's lives. They used the old adage KISS (keep is simple stupid). Democrats are often accused of being overly intellectual and they kept going straight to the point.
Unity and focus is key to a Democratic Party victory this fall. Don't respond to his BS. Let groups like the Lincoln Project do the majority of the heavy lifting on the negative side of the campaign. Yes I know they will at some point down the road revert to their Republican ways but we would be stupid to now use them at this point in time. Let Joe Biden focus on his plans for the future and policies and Senator Harris prosecute the case against Trump. They need to keep Trump so boxed in that he becomes ineffectual against the Biden/Harris ticket. The more publicly unhinged he becomes the more it will help to drive out the vote against him.

(11,813 posts)...to Michelle Obama bringing the proverbial roof down with her absolutely eviscerating dissection of everything that is Trump. So, decent first night.

(32,017 posts)It was a good show, but that one line is the one that well be hearing from now until November. That one knocked it out of the park.

(52,163 posts)Neither Michelle Obama's nor Kristin Urquiza's speech would have been anywhere near as effective in a convention hall. Neither speech would have been served by a crowd interrupting for applause. I do wonder what the keystone speaker will do but for the them of last night, this format was just about perfect.

(7,326 posts)I even got misty-eyed a a time or two, and I consider myself pretty immune to political rhetoric.
One thing I really like is how have't just tried to translate the convention format into a TV show. They did some stuff you just couldn't do in the usual format, and that is GOOD. Frankly,I like this WAY better than the usual convention. I kinda hope this is the new norm for DNC's.

(1,737 posts)All parts were engaging. The night culminated with the ultimate ass whooping from the queen of "elegant shade" Michelle Obama. We need the same energy each night. Highlighting the huge error in the white house while simultaneously emphasizing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris' strengths, accomplishments, and how they will get to build back better and get America out of the complete mess we are in.
The RNC is taking notes. However, theirs will resemble petty jabs, lies, more lies, endless accolades, and ego-stroking of their dear leader and wannabe dictator.

Proud as hell to be a member of a diverse rainbow of a political party. I dont know how Republicans can face themselves. Bitter. Cold. Unloving. Ungracious. Hate-filled. Ignorant.
I thank my ancestors for my liberal DNA!

(22,236 posts)It's obvioius that the people who put this together put a lot of time and effort into it. When you can pull something like this off, with that many people speaking and making no big mistakes while getting the message out, that is pretty remarkable.

(7,572 posts).....The frankly boring schedule of speakers in the last century's concept of coming together in one place to select the presidential candidate, is like a parade with horses and buggies. Today's technology makes that tradition almost unnecessary. The main purpose of this event was to really present the candidates to the nation with a bang. It was much more intimate this way, speaking directly to the TV audience rather than watching someone speak in a huge auditorium. (Of course if you were there in that historic auditorium, it was probably exciting!) But this reached millions in a much more effective way. Even the less sophisticated moments (audience of people clapping on their couches after the speeches) was amusing to me.
I really applaud the producers for their talents, and for the Democrats for making a clear message statement throughout the program.
Edit: I suggest watching it on a medium without the talking heads interrupting on the networks. UTube, C-Span, livestream

(2,004 posts)The media is having a difficult time, because they cannot go to their usual "Democrats in Disarray" standard lazy writing that they always have pre-written.
Michele Obama was the BEST!
Amy Klobuchar gave a great speech, too, by the way.

(12,265 posts)Nobody on the other side is going to be swayed, most are not paying attention. I actually felt fired up after last night. I loved the beginning which reminded my what America really is about.
I think it is succeeding!

(10,833 posts)Think it came off far better than expected. The format itself is completely foreign to the traditional convention we're all accustomed to. But the Dems made it work.
And then, there was Michelle Obama who blew the bloody roof off.

(1,184 posts)Democrats were well-prepared and realized a "virtual convention" would have to take on a different kind of format than a regular convention. It's more than just transferring convention speeches to Zoom.
Consistent messages, heartfelt explanations of Joe's life, the gamut of people endorsing Joe (left to center to right), and powerful performances. Having a host/moderator is a great idea. Just very well thought out and carefully planned.
That said:
If I have to pick on one thing, I HATE the videos of people applauding post-speech. It's hokey and comes across as incredibly lame. There's a gravity to these speeches (much like a president giving a speech from the Oval Office, and no one expects applause at the end), and the applause, in my opinion, ruins a poignant experience. Reminds me of laugh tracks in corny sitcoms. If it's funny, we'll laugh. If it's a great speech, people will get it and "applaud" at home. I know that it's some kind of attempt to recapture the crowd feeling of an in-person convention, but it doesn't work.
