General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI sincerely welcome the help being offered and given by our Republican allies.
When it comes right down to it, I am able to look at things realistically and rationally by remembering that we're not MARRYING them for Pete's sake. They aren't "Trojan Horses". We're not re-writing our platform to suit them. They aren't taking over our party.
We're simply accepting their help... and we need all the help we can get. All of this handwringing and overwrought emotion and anger serves no useful purpose. Second-guessing and denigrating our nominee and party only creates distrust, suspicion and negativity. Threats of retaliation, or to withhold contributions (or votes), or promises to change party affiliations do not help either.
Those types of threats and smears only serve to create an atmosphere of negativity: Negativity generates apathy. Apathy discourages voter turnout. Low voter turnout gives Republicans a chance to steal the elections.
Many Republicans (and others) will continue to speak out against Trump (and for Biden) from now until election day, so everyone needs to get used to it. They're here to help and they're here to stay.
All I'm trying to say is this... I hope that the angry people can find a way to just let-go and TRUST JOE! We need to put our nation first and not indulge our vanity and pride. We can't afford that luxury. Joe knows what he's doing. Our party leaders know what's needed right now... so get out of the way and let them get on with doing what needs to be done.
Thank you! The Biden/Harris 2020 Train is about to leave the station... GET ON BOARD!!
C'MON! GET IN! We're taking back America!
Joe/Kamala or Biden/Harris 2020!!
They're stronger together & can't be bought!!
Jump on the Biden Bandwagon & abandon the revolution!!

(67,505 posts)We need moderate voters this year as we did in 18 and 19. I think AOC is very talented, but she can't run down to Ohio and campaign for us effectively. Ohio is in play. Kasich could help deliver the state. The fact is we are only successful with a big tent approach. That has always been true.

I am no fan of Kasich, but I thought he was quite good last night, talking about putting country ahead of party.

(15,608 posts)to advise the office holders. It does not make any difference if Joe went into full dementia. He will have the smart people backing him up. In the Democratic Party we can be assured that when his time has come, he will be told and he will hand over the Resolute Desk to Kamala.
A republican will never give up what he has voluntarily, even if it is best for the office.

(43,023 posts)there were pictures of him all over my ancestral home. Mostly my grandmother's doing and my father, although a conservative Republican, believed military leaders should not enter politics because they were trained to conquer, not govern. His experiences in Patton's Third Army no doubt influenced that view.
Anyway, the point of all this is that I have been alive for every election since Truman, and while I don't remember the details of all of them, none of them were even close to the divisions and hatreds today.
Yeah, I remember Nixon, and Johnson and the massive crowds against the Viet Nam mess. And I remember Kent State and the assassination of King. And lunch counters and firehouses and angry dogs taught to hate black skins.
And "Strange Fruit"
Back then, though, it was hate the commies and the n***. Specific targets, so you could chose a side to join. Or oppose.
Not good at all, but predictable, and you chose your weapons and fought the good fight.
Now, it's unfocused fears and hatreds so it's so much more difficult to identify. Even the haters themselves aren't so sure just what it is they hate. We call it racism, but it's more than hating a race-- it's the inability to accept anyone not conforming to your personal standards. Reverting to ancient behaviors mistrusting the people in Cave #3 because they are going to steal your wives and food. Of course, Cave #3 believes the same of you so you will never sit down and talk it out.
The planet has had times of cooperation, but more often times of empire. I fear our short era of cooperation is coming to an end. And that invites empire.

(457 posts)We need every vote we can get. Even ex-felons who have paid their debt to society.
It is simply like this ---
Say you're a vegan and don't like people who feast on animals.
Say you're carrying a heavy load up the hill by yourself and sweating profusely. Two or three meat-eaters come and help you carry the load up. You thank them for their help.
It does not mean you'll start eating meat and give up your vegan principles just because they helped you.

I sincerely don't understand this party purity crap by a few here, our Democracy is under attack by the Mango Menace and his criminal organization and we should welcome all, rather they be Dem., Rep. or Ind., we are going to need every vote we can get to expel this criminal from the WH and if that means allowing anti Trump R's at the Convention, then so be it.
As you said, we're not marrying them.

(13,410 posts)Convention is about rousing support for the nominee. Yes, appeal to the base--firm it up--but raise support for the candidate from the middle ground persuadable voters too. The fundamental plank in the platform, IMO, is get that orange anus out of the Whitehouse. Getting the Whitehouse fumigated is gonna take votes from people that aren't always allies on every issue, and accepting that is fundamental to success in any election of this magnitude. Anything else beyond the issue of firing Donnie can be hashed out later.
Take the republican help this year!

(62,242 posts)As I posted yesterday, the people making this political decision are from an organization that has won 6 of the last 7 presidential elections, by popular vote.
A couple of odd events prevented them from being 7-0, & 28 straight years of D presidents.
I trust their political acumen.
