By Joe Concha - 08/18/20 09:22 AM EDT
Covington Catholic High School graduate Nicholas Sandmann, whose interaction with Omaha Tribe elder Nathan Phillips at the Lincoln Memorial went viral, will speak at the Republican National Convention next week.
The teenager made the announcement in a tweet on Monday night.

(9,076 posts)There's no doubt the kid's a Republican asshat. But the stories about him weren't true. Just read this thread. People still think he behaved in a way he did not.
That's why CNN and the Post settled with him.
It's like that North Carolina university rape case. Even after the kids were exonerated, you still had people saying, "Well, something must have happened . . ." They were too attached to the narrative.
Same here. The kid may be an anti-woman Republican, but he never did what he was widely accused of by the media. That's why he got a lot of money from them. But people never read beyond the viral video they saw, so they still believe what was written at the time. It's a shame.

(3,534 posts)Its just theres been so much crazy shit these last three years its hard to keep track. I dont want to waste your time, but could you briefly elaborate on what the media accused him of doing vs. what actually happened? The misrepresentation that led to him winning his lawsuit? I too am dismayed at how often people on both sides are willing to accept a false narrative just because it conforms to their beliefs. The truth always should come first.

(9,076 posts)And they ran with a narrative that he and a bunch of his classmates were galloping racists going after a Native American elder.
It turned out they were just standing there, that they were approached by Black Israelites who were hurling racist language at them.
But he was wearing a MAGA hat, so that was enough for a lot of people.
I only remember it because I thought it was kind of a low point on our side that we were going after a minor child for something he didn't even do. Social media just isn't a great look on any of us much of the time.

(3,534 posts)Of course, I could be simplifying it a bit (as could they), but it seems to me he won his case with the Washington Post on what amounts to a technicality. The first suit they brought against the Post was thrown out by the judge. They claimed the Post painted Sandmann as a racist, and the judge decided there was no basis for that claim.
So they refiled a suit on the basis of The Post claiming that the Covington boys had blocked Nathan Phillips (the Native American elder) and would not allow him to retreat. Actually that was one of the 33 claims the lawyers made (30 of which were thrown out by the judge) that were deemed worthy of further scrutiny, and I suppose the reason for The Posts decision to settle out of court.
Its all here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_2019_Lincoln_Memorial_confrontation
Anyway, I do remember a lot of hatred being directed at a stupid kid for the stupid thing he did.

Less than 1% of all rapes result in felony convictions.

It doesn't seem that they understand they need to find more voters in order to win - Trump has pissed away a fair amount of his supporters from four years ago and he's mobilized a lot more of us to vote that may not have last time, or voted third party.
