The love story behind Joe Biden's 1967 Corvette

If presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden wins in November, he will have to hand over the keys to the only car he's ever loved: a 1967 Chevy Corvette convertible Stingray.

The Secret Service forbids the commander in chief to drive. Even once his term ends, a former president can never drive a car on an open road again, according to CNBC and various reports.

For Biden, who has said he loves to drive, that will be tough. The car Biden loves to drive the most is built for the open road: 327 cubic inch, L79 V8 engine rated at 350 horsepower with a 4-speed manual transmission, according to Hagerty, a Michigan company that specializes in collector car insurance and valuations.

It is capable of going 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds.

"I shouldn’t say this, but I like speed," Biden told Jay Leno in a 2016 episode of "Jay Leno's Garage" when Biden got behind the wheel of his beloved 'vette and talked about the family history attached to it.

-snip-

The car was a wedding gift from Biden's dad in August 1967. Biden shared with Leno the story of how it happened.

I'm sure there's some rich Democrats in the world with large land holding that could be secured so he could have some time on the (closed) 'open road'.

Being a Vette guy I've followed it. He was only allowed to drive to end of his driveway. The Leno bit was filmed in an industrial park or something like that. It took an act of God to get that done.

For some reason, I always pictured Obama buying a Tesla after he retired.

Hold a rally there and then we (the tax payers) will pay for it. I'd be fine with that.

i never had a corvette, but i did have my great-aunt's 67 pontiac catalina and i think she had a 450 engine. sadly i only passed once in it, but it was like a i had a jet engine. i mostly had a 72 + 73 delta 88(olds) not sure if i tried it w/ the 73 new yorker, but i would go to a windy northern wi back road + it was my little personal la manze. i guess once my aunt was behind me + was trying to catch me. i didn't even see her in the rear mirror. sigh. i miss those old GMs. even the new yorker. i drove that barge like it was a sports car. i made her move. did about 78-80 going up north w/ a strong tail wind.

Leno said the Secret Service would not allow the vice president to drive during his term and for six months after it ended.

So it sounds like Biden has been able to drive the car a bit since being in office and before he started his run for the presidency. I'm glad.

it is a sweet car. He's owned it for 53 years. That's pretty remarkable. He's a pretty remarkable man.

I just love Joe.
