COMMON? I'm not complaining about all acronyms. Everybody uses and FBI and CIA and WTF. But, the use of acronyms used only by a select community or profession on a board with a very diverse readership is at best poor communication and at worst a sort of condescension: "Oh, you don't know that RNBs are Red Neck Ballerinas? I thought everyone knew that!!"

(6,486 posts)Those who:
1. Want to communicate
2. Want some sort of ego boost by flinging keystrokes into the universe as quickly as possible
Type 1's tell you what they're talking about and even tend to use whole sentences. They may even proofread or preview what they're writing. OMG, some even edit what they write to make it clearer or more accurate.
Type 2's are EBDs (ego boosting dorks). "I don't need no steenking proofredecovfefe." Since they have no intention of communicating, I give them their druthers by ignoring what they say.

(22,143 posts)go to my google screen or bing drop down line, input the unknown acronym to figure out what the poster is saying or means. Most people though, if you ask them, what the acronym is/stands for, will tell you. It's that DU community spirit, all looking out for each other.

(14,565 posts)This site has always been relatively restrained using initialisms and acronyms but recently it has been annoying worse.
It is not clever. It is not helpful. It is lazy and pathetic.
Today I really appreciated it when someone spotlighted a tweet and fully spelled out "for the win" in the header instead of the typical slop
