https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/20/politics/white-house-teachers-essential-workers/index.htmlCNN)The White House is formally declaring teachers essential workers as part of their efforts to encourage schools around the country to reopen for in-person learning.
The move is just the latest in the administration's aggressive campaign to pressure districts into bringing back students this fall -- and although the essential worker designation provides guidance for educators that is only voluntary, it calls on teachers to return to the classroom even after potential exposure.
Vice President Mike Pence announced the decision to governors on a call earlier this week, a person familiar with the decision said. Under Department of Homeland Security guidance issued this week, teachers are now considered "critical infrastructure workers" and are subject to the same kinds of advisories as other workers who have borne that label -- such as doctors and law enforcement officers.
More at link. Imho they can teach from home just as well as in person. The DNC demonstrated that virtual can be even better, during the tRump virus, than in person.

President Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday evening, using the Defense Production Act (DPA) to order meat processing plants to stay open and designating them as critical infrastructure.
The order will apply to all meat processing plants in the U.S. in an effort to prevent further disruptions to the food supply. Trump signaled he would sign this order earlier on Tuesday following estimates that meat production capacity nationwide could be reduced by as much as 80 percent.
It is important that processors of beef, pork, and poultry ("meat and poultry" in the food supply chain continue operating and fulfilling orders to ensure a continued supply of protein for Americans. However, outbreaks of COVID-19 among workers at some processing facilities have led to the reduction in some of those facilities' production capacity, the president wrote in the order.

(4,992 posts)It's doable. And we'll get things done. But distance learning is not for everyone (and actually relatively small percentage), and is not even close to what can/should be done in-person.
That said, as a teacher, I don't think we should be in-person this year and most schools will likely close due to number of positives. We will get through and we'll do the best we can, but it is nowhere near just as good of an experience.

With the exception of higher level lab courses in the sciences, I believe -at least the high school level - can teach and learn as well virtually. And, even for lab courses, there are virtual dissection, physics, and chem programs available
Really, the same argument could be made the other way, that some students learn better virtually. Students with ADHD and Autism, to name two very common conditions which make vurtual learning quite a it more effective.
At any rate, I agree with you that kids should not be crammed together in the petri dishes that are largely attributed to bringing us the flu every year. Not with tRum virus being so contagious.
