Still a badass fire, but the USFS says 45% contained. As a daily observer and smoke-breather I hope they are correct. I'm tired of this MoFo!

Air quality hazardous for a week and continuing due to wildfires. "Unprecedented."

(2,252 posts)...my wife, the dogs, and I. The smoke hung in the air all the way up the McKenzie. Santiam Pass was a grey out ... no Mt Washington, no Three-Fingered Jack. About 10 miles south of Sisters the air began to clear, but the mushroom cloud from the fire was visible to the north. However, we could not see, or appreciate, Shiva descending to engulf the earth, as captured in the posted photo.
Bend air was OK until 4pm or so, then the haze appeared and the headaches and throat irritation began.
On Wednesday morning, our car in the motel parking lot had ash spattered about. Leaving Bend, we entered the smoke zone only a few miles out of town. We stopped for coffee in Sisters where the air was thick.
Out of Sisters, as the climb up Santiam Pass began, the air became suddenly clear. We caught a quick view of Three-Fingered Jack, startlingly bold in the clear blue sky. At the summit, Mt Washington stood unobscured. We stopped at Clear Lake for a dog/human bio-break and walk - the nascent autumn colors were reflected in the copper water.
Thanks to the thousands of women and men working to contain this fire.

(2,921 posts)Thanks for your descriptive tale.
We went star-gazing the other night on top of Mary's Peak and were just barely above the haze from all this mess.
Thanks DemoTex for the beautiful photos and keeping an eye out on our beloved forests.

(46,179 posts)Last Tuesday when I left work it was raining ash; my truck was covered Wed. morning when I went out to head for work.
Recesses and PEs have been indoors, some sporting events and practices cancelled because of all the smoke.
I read this morning it was supposed to be 65 % contained, but the smoke was blocking some of the afternoon sun today.
