Nothing else could do it.
But if it happens, it is SUCH a game changer.
Even if he just SAYS there's a vaccine, even if people can't get it, it's a game changer.
Two months.

Truth be told the greatest security threat to the USA is Don the fucking Con - he will kill you and then claim to have prevented 2,000,000 more from dying. Then he'll look you in the eye and tell you he did a great job.
Why would anyone take his bullshit vaccine. This monster should be locked up urgently.

Assuming they have a vaccine ready, and it has completed phase 3, and has been shown to be effective and safe, and been peer review, it is going to take time to distribute it, and all the logistics associated with that
A good number of the vaccines require a second dose 30 days later. Even if things went perfectly, I dont see the public getting access to it before the first quarter of next year
Vaccine or no vaccine, trumps handling of the pandemic was and is a disaster. The games they are playing with the stimulus package is a disgrace
He doesnt own the vaccine, he owns the 180000 people who have died, and have permanent damage, and not responding in a timely manner to to the stimulus
A vaccine doesnt mean everything is fine. We will be lucky if it is 50% effective, like the influenza vaccine, and because of that if precautions still are not taken seriously, because people become more complacent because of false messaging, we could very well end up in an even worse situation
However, if there is an effective treatment and vaccine, that would be a game changer as far as dealing with the pandemic
I dont think it will be a game changer as far as the election is concerned though. What has he done in the last three and three quarter years? Very little, and hurt a lot of people and businesses

(44,974 posts)FDA normally doesn't approve vaccine unless they have been fully tested in the US. Yes, Trump will pressure them, and they will likely cave in under the pressure. But people will be skeptical because this vaccine won't be fully tested. At least I know I would be.

(44,974 posts)But they are nowhere near finished. Considering they are using a novel technique, I would be especially worried about that type of vaccine if it wasn't fully tested.

(50,567 posts)Some of Trump's base believes vaccines are the mark of the beast described in the Book of Revelation. They also believe the coronavirus is a government plot to force us all to take this mark.
Trump can't afford to piss those people off because losing the Christian Extremist vote will, by itself, be enough to throw the election to Biden in a lot of states currently seen as lost causes by our side.

(44,974 posts)But there won't be any time to figure out if its even works.
And a lot of his supporters don't believe in vaccines. And Biden supporters will figure out FDA approved it under pressure without normal testing.

(2,203 posts)a vaccine was released, and even if it actually went through all the usual testing, and even if it put a total and complete end to the virus (none of these are likely cases IMO), how exactly would it be perceived that 'he' somehow gets credit for it?
So the script is - all the shit that is happening and has happened is someone else fault (commonly Obama or Biden), anything good that happens, he takes credit for (even if done by Obama/Biden).
I seem to recall he said 'I take not responsibility' - OK, dear leader, that that should apply to all things bad or good.
Well his followers will follow whatever his narrative is, but if that is the claim to fame, do you really think it would influence anyone to vote for him that does not want to now?

(10,927 posts)I seriously doubt a vaccine announcement will have much of an impact.
He never follows through on his promises. He promised tests, there were no tests. He promised PPE, there was none. He promised ventilators, they didn't work.
He's incompetent and people know it. If you handed him working vaccines today, he'd just hoard them to drive up prices.

(9,275 posts)My son-in-laws mother works in the vaccine section. She said all the pharmaceutical companies are gearing up cooperatively to mass produce a vaccine but only when it is proven safe through the usual trials, etc. Companies like Merck have billions $$$ at stake and will NOT jeopardize themselves putting out a potentially unsafe product. I feel a lot better about it now that Ive talked to her. Shes had some fellow employees get sick with Covid, one just got off a ventilator after 75 days. She knows we have to take this very seriously indeed.
This was at a birthday party for our granddaughter and we all tried hard not to discuss politics but her other son started taking about how Covid will go away after the election - she shut him down quickly on that one.

(63,221 posts)Good to hear. I, for one, would not trust a vaccine that Trump announced or endorsed coming out in October. I think it would be worthless at best and lethal at worst. Besides, a large portion of his cult members are anti-vax, and I am not so sure they would go for it either.

(16,530 posts)A game changer.
There's nothing surprising about a product that we have known to be in the works for awhile now. When the vaccine will become available and the quality of the vaccine is unknown. However, the mere fact that you've mentioned it as a possibility in August suggests it will be no surprise in October because a surprise should be unexpected. If one becomes available, 45 and the Trump friendly media will try to milk it as a game changer but we should call out the absurdity of that notion.
Almost 200,000 lives have been lost in the United States, because of Trump's actions/in actions and aversion to science. Scientists deserves the credit for any vaccine and not president Hydroxychloroquine Drink Bleach and Inject UV light in the body Trump.
We have to prepare for and push back at these Trumpian gimmicks.

(3,282 posts)he could deliver right now that would change peoples minds. I just saw a poll where over half of the respondents said they would never even consider voting for Trump. That's a really nutty level of unpopularity.
Nobody who isn't in his cult believes what he says. He could say a vaccine was going to be available the day after the election and nobody would buy it.
