(25,902 posts)Am I right in thinking that means there are probably a lot more cases than have been reported?

(38,017 posts)...Christus runs 40 hospitals in Texas, Louisiana and New Mexico and had 95,000 of the of the more than half a million tests Texas recently revealed were caught up in a backlog.
That backlog has caused counties to report thousands of cases from as far back as March that they were never aware of.
Every time we got close to getting them the data the way they wanted it, then they would change the way they needed it, Bagchi said.
State health officials say Christus sent spreadsheet-style documents that had errors, but Bagchi says the data was fine.
The state characterized these as coding errors and there werent any errors, he said. Our data was good.

(1,850 posts)Which does lower the count of positive cases. That was 45's plan, and clearly his administration is trying to reduce covid cases being counted. And not reporting them seems to be another way to "lower the numbers."
But numbers do get reflected in percentage of positive cases per 100,000.
That number is on the rise.
Here's a recent interactive article. They have charts showing testing trends.
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/coronavirus-testing.html
An average of 727,000 tests per day were performed over the past week, according to data collected by the Covid Tracking Project, far below the current nationwide target of 1.4 million daily tests. The target, which is based on a methodology developed by researchers at the Harvard Global Health Institute, is different for each state and varies over time as infection rates change.
see article for more data.
There is so much wrong with the US response to this pandemic, and manipulating the data is yet another effort by this administration to lie and minimize and hide the true scope. Their in person, non-masked, not socially distant convention will encourage and allow many to justify forgoing those protocols, and we will begin to see numbers rise again, even with reduced testing and underreporting, which happens mostly in red states. But they travel to blue states, and live in them too.
Wear a mask (properly) and stay safe!
