My nearly, brand new grand daughter is undergoing heart surgery tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. The procedure is to repair a congenital heart defect, basically two holes in her heart.
I announced her entrance into the world back at the end of May, a 2-pound preemie who has been through crisis after crisis, stunning her physicians and giving her parents mega anxiety. Not to mention her Nan (that would be me).
Cassandra came into the world a little over 2 pounds. She now weighs in a 6 pounds, 5 ounces. Still tiny but fierce.
The heart surgery is the big challenge. Once she scrambles over this hurdle, her doctors will begin therapies to strengthen her lung capacity and then she gets to go home. Which means my son and his wife can return to a semi-normal life and routine.
So, any prayers you have sitting around looking for a destination? I'd ask you to whisper them in the direction of the Nemours Pediatric hospital in Wilmington, DE., under the name of Baby Cassandra, referred to on her floor as the Miracle Baby.
Thanks in advance!

(11,134 posts)Just got off the phone with my daughter-in-law who is trying desperately to keep it together. Her two sons (previous marriage) started remote school today just to add madness to the mayhem. But she was really delighted to hear that the prayer/blessing machine was up and running for Cassandra. In addition to DU, I have friends in Memphis and a very dear friend in New Jersey who have contacted their own prayer groups on Cassie's behalf.
The Universe is going to be very noisy tonight with a gazillion whispers of love and support.
Thank you once again.

(23,029 posts)My mother was a preemie not much bigger than Cassandra. She was born in 1922, at home before her mother could get to a hospital, in the middle of a Buffalo winter. My mother's aunt was present and wrapped the tiny babe in a cloth table napkin, placed her in a bread basket, and put the basket on the open door of the kitchen oven until an ambulance arrived.
There was some heart valve damage to my mother and they did not have the advanced medical techniques then that we have today. But she survived (obviously or I wouldn't be here today). She not only survived, but lived to be 90 years old, and to see her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
So please take heart and hope from that example. All babies are different, but with good medical care, prayers, and a baby's tough fighting instinct, they can eventually thrive.
Blessings to your family, Cassandra, and the medical team.

(395 posts)My first post ever here.
I was born with a hole in my heart and was known as a blue baby. In 1964, I was one of the first people to have open heart surgery to cover the hole in a heart that was the size of a 50 cent piece. Within a week, I was an active kid who could run, play, and enjoy life to the fullest.
Your kid will be the same soon. Best wishes and prayers.

FailureToCommunicate
(14,158 posts)assured us they do this routinely, it was a common procedure for them, even in the tiny tiny hearts of premies.
It all went fine, and they are healthy, hulking twenty somethings now.
So, you can at least not have extra worries about this.
But, we'll send prayers Cassie's way none the less.
