They've lost everything and have no insurance. If anyone can help, literally anything is appreciated. ❤️
A few hours later, when we went to our home around the corner, the sky was an angry orange color that I will never forget, and the ash was falling fast, covering our deck in large flakes. With the sky getting darker and darker, we decided to pack up our animals and leave for the night, even though we weren't under an evacuation warning. We thought we were acting out of an abundance of caution. We had no idea this would be the last time we saw our home of 30+ years. It is hard to even write this. We need all the help we can get, but I've put off making this gofundme, because I didn't want to re-live it.
I watched social media in horror that night, seeing reports of my entire home town burning to the ground. In a matter of hours, we and everyone in Berry Creek, Ca had their worlds turned upside down and reduced to ashes.
Mom and I are undoubtedly fortunate that we made it out alive, when not everyone was able to that night. But we were left homeless and with nothing but few clothes we packed that night. Any little bit that you could spare will help us start our lives over.

Here's where I spoke of this the night of the fire.

(19,564 posts)We truly, deeply appreciate the kindness. It's a mess right now. In the video of their home it's nothing. Nothing but ashes. The pic above a screen cap of their home. 😭

(7,294 posts)I could have easily been in the same predicament (from Walbridge fire, which came within a few miles from me), so my heart goes out to your mom. I hope she can recover somewhat; she's lucky to have such a supportive daughter.

(19,564 posts)Just like I always do, because I knew how devastating they are to people. Now I know that in a too intimate way.
They're safe and sound right now, which is more than others. I'm deeply happy to have her physically whole. ❤️

(83,750 posts)I asked myself, how does anyone recover from that?

(19,564 posts)I'm not sure either right now. I just know we have to recover somehow.

(19,564 posts)This fire season has been been so intense, and so brutal on far too many lives. I don't know what's going to become of California in the future. It tears my heart into pieces watching all this take place.

(14,490 posts)May they have a speedy recovery of their lives in a new home soon. Sending a little their way and just regret we can't do more right now.
Only regret that we couldn't GoFundMe a good steady rain for California over a month ago.
Big DU hugs to you and your family.....

(19,564 posts)Truly, any bit is a blessing. My love and thanks to you for both your kind words and for your help. We're so overwhelmed but I'm trying to be the rock and hold it all together.
California is in such dire straits, I worry for my home states future.

I'm so glad you're there for them as their anchor as a base of support. Take good care of yourself, too.

Glad she saved her critters. And I hope her fund surpasses the goal.

(51,590 posts)in San Diego. School was closed for a week each time (that had never happened before). Both occurred the last week of Oct too. Teachers lost their homes yet they rebuilt. Another friend lost all his animals and home in a fire a few years earlier. I have had my evac stuff ready and definitely insurance! My friend's shoes melted while walking looking for stuff in the ruins. Nothing was left. I understand what you are going through. I got a local "go fund me" started at my school.

(19,564 posts)She had a fall a few days in. We thought at first it was a mini stroke, but apparently she had an aneurysm which slow leaked. Maybe the fall she had led to the aneurysm? We don't know for sure. Her BP was 195/62, enough to cause the aneurysm if it was a weak artery in her brain.
She's in the best of hands and hopefully will be home soon. Maybe even as soon as tomorrow now! She's spunky and extremely responsive. I've just been really, really busy the past several days.
I appreciate and thank you for your kindness. ❤️

(19,564 posts)Depending on her latest MRI tonight she may even get to come home to me tomorrow!! I didn't update with the bad news, I waited until it was positive. She's speaking much better and perky again. We think (my siblings and I) she sounds like mom again.
Yes, it's been tough On her, but she's 74 and the stress was definitely a factor. She's always been fiercely independent, which makes this entire new process very difficult for her.
Her little dog misses her so desperately. I keep sending and showing her videos of Peanut in an attempt to make her get better.

We'll weather this storm eventually. We're strong and we're survivors. We've got this. It'll just take some time.
You're a truly kind heart. I'll never forget your kindness.
