My friend's husband got laid off.

She told me that she is not worried because after Romney wins everything will be better. She honestly believes that Romney will win and he will create jobs. She is a conservative, christian, middle class, suburban, stay at home mom. She watches fox news and listens to Rush Limbaugh. I usually don't discuss politics with her. She knows that I'm a liberal democrat. I want to tell her all the real facts about Romney and Obama. I wish I could get through to her but she has been brainwashed by the republican party. I'm also worried because this is the first time her husband has really had to look for a job in ten years. He started working for this company right out of college. He doesn't know how to write a resume or do a job search.

Conservative people must be reminded of the faustian bargain that they constantly vote for. It amazes me that woman thinks a jobs destroyer like Mitt Romney will get her husband another job. She is far better off with President Obama getting re-elected.

Make sure she knows that 10 years paying in, and her husband and family can now reap some of those benefits back to them.

Resume writing seminars.
Unemployment.
Job fairs.
Food stamps, WIC, and free health care services even.

Also, make sure she knows that Rmoney wants to take those all away. And that as one of the newly minted 47%, she and her husband are now in Rmoney's disposable camp that he doesn't need to worry about since they're now slackers. (just kidding about this last part, sorta)

Her husband has never been unemployed and she has been a stay at home mom. I'm guessing she doesn't have a clue how lucky she has been.

It is ironic that she views reality through the lens of Christianity, Fox News, and Rush Limbaugh. Hint: one of these things doesn't really belong with the other two. Maybe she will learn something about reality if their situation turns into adversity- but I wouldn't bet on it.

Market is different

Everything depends on what kind of job, and who you know

I am a software engineer, and I got lucky, right place, right time

But just sending resumes, at least for skilled jobs will not cut it today

You need to get your foot in the door

Starting with linkedin especially if it is a professional or skilled job is a good start

Registering with dice.com, monster.com, indeed.com, and other sites is also important, but your resume better be ready for those sites

Also a good recruiter can get you in the door for an interview, but depending on the job the interview process can be grueling

I would hope he appreciates the unemployment insurance to help make ends meet, and it is because of the Democrats why that is available

She is from a very blue state, her family is pretty much democrats and one of her closet friends (me) is a liberal democrat. She married a conservative but nice guy from a very conservative family and she lives in a very red state. She graduated from college but she got married immediately so she has never had a paying job. I'm not giving up on her. When the kids are a little older, she plans to go back to school or get a job.

I pick and choose among the conservatives around here and can tolerate some righties if we don't talk politics.

I do free resumes for friends and it's amazing how that really can cheer a person up. I recently did two for two unemployed, really, really hardcore mountain guys who do contruction. They had no clue and no money to get anyone to help them, combined with a distrust of any charities that might help them.

It made them smile to see their skills and experience under their very stylish letterheads.

They are both working now.

there's just nothing like a good resume to make you feel like somebody when unemployment's got you feeling like a nobody.

There are a lot of great sites and low-cost software with templates, too.

I just use Word but I have a cool CD of templates, too.

Your response and your OP seem irreconcilable to me. Maybe you can start by getting her to turn off Fox News and Rush Limbaugh. All they do is get "good people" to blame liberals and Democrats for their problems. And no really good person does that.

Thu Sep 27, 2012, 01:13 AM

write his resume, or do anything to assist him in his job search, you are simply enabling them. Suggest she contact the Republican party for help. Tell her that her church can provide them with food and rent/mortgage money. Tell her not to accept any help from the wicked, evil government, that only losers who take no responsibility for themselves accept any handouts. In short, make her actually live up to what she believes.

I get so incredibly sick of the pampered class saying how awful unemployment benefits, food stamps, Medicare, etc, are, until they themselves need help. And then they're totally entitled. Well, if others don't deserve it then they don't deserve it either.

And too bad that the husband has to look for work. Millions of others have had to also. He can go to the public library -- wait! that's another socialist outfit -- to get help writing his resume.

Fuck 'em.

But I want the family using government social services, especially if kids are involved. I despise conservatives and their "mine" view of life. I see loudmouth conservatives railing against government, during their diatribes, they list several government programs they think are important and worthwhile. The fuckers just don't get it.
