I'm serious.
To use Trump's own words, "it is what it is".
Please stay home, all my DU readers tonight. It's always much safer there.

(25,485 posts)Trump's ego won't let that happen. You think he's done all this showboating just to drop out?

(51,715 posts)Trump might end up on a vent, but he's too much of a megalomaniac to volutarily resign from the top of the ticket.
I understand where you're coming from though. After all, Sarah Palin quit the governor's office to get away ftom ethics issues.

(8,044 posts)He knows hes losing by a landslide too big to steal. If Pence replaces him then Pence will take the blame for the loss. Trump could claim he dropped out to help science by trying out experimental treatments, or, maybe fake his own death (my pet theory), or not fake his death.

No ethical, responsible physicians would ever lie to the public about the Presidents condition, would they?
Polybius
(15,483 posts)It would take a massive team of them to convince to lie. Has anyone famous ever pulled of faking a death in the past 40 years? Don't say Tupac.

(11,949 posts)All he watched is fox. He doesnt believe his advisors because he is smarter.
In his mind he will win.
If he loses in a decisive fashion however, I see him packing it up and going to Florida. Leaving the country in the lurch.

(145,567 posts)trump's base will not accept anyone else and trump is hoping to leverage his base to for a NY state pardon. I do not believe that trump really believe that he can truly contest the election results if the current polling results are accurate. If the current polls are accurate, Biden will win by a landslide and there will be no legitimate way to contest the election result. Floriuda will have accurate election results out on election night that will be good except for some miliary ballots. If trump loses Florida, then any election contest will be doomed to fail. However trump's threats could give him leverage to negotiate a plea deal with Governor Cuomo, AG James or DA Cyrus Vance where trump would agree to a peaceful transfer of power in exchange for no prison time for NY state tax charges.
I believe that trump will either pardon himself or will resign and have Pence pardon him for all federal crimes. trump may pardon his family members and some loyal idiots like Barr. The pardon will get rid of federal crimes and so trump needs to worry about state crimes and hsi biggest risk is NY state. I believe that trump will cur a deal with NY for a peaceful transfer of power in exchange for no prison time for turmp and perhaps members of his family
Carville agrees with my theory

This would be in effect a plea deal and not a pardon

If trump drops out now, he loses bargaining leverage with NY AG James and DA Cyrus Vance

(292 posts)Trumps ego could never let that happen. If he still has a pulse he will be on the ticket.

(54,443 posts)He doesn't have to be compos mentis. Hell, there is plenty of evidence that he is not that now. But if he is still able to give orders, and they are coherent enough to be understood, Pence will be there panting like a good poodle, doing whatever fearless leader tells him to. If Trump is breathing and conscious, and doesn't have a tube stuck down his throat, he will not stand for anyone replacing him, and there is not enough backbone among those who could invoke 25 to do it. Ain't gonna happen.
Besides, at this point, I think the Republicans are starting to think their future depends on everything being Trump's fault, and no fault whatsoever of theirs. The crew of a sinking ship never volunteers to go down with the captain. If he loses as bigly as it looks like now, they will want no part of the blame. If they lose the Senate majority (even now, not a sure thing), they will want it to be Trump's fault alone. Their "valiant" Republican senators went down swinging. The fact that plenty of the endangered ones are completely useless will be swept so far under the rug, that, if they lose their seats, their names will forthwith be mentioned less than the names of CIA officers who died in the line of duty. Susan Collins? Martha McSally? Who? never heard of them. One hit pop singers in the 1950s, maybe?
