They should have a mic kill switch set up for the moderator, but don't give it to them until

Trump breaks the rules. Then when he freaks out about it, they can say, if you break the rules, so do I. The only thing he can do about it is start following the rules, or walk out.

Let the moderator extend by 30 seconds and control when the time is started.

I think debates have devolved from KennedyNixon to being like point/counterpoint (the cnn yelling match) to jerry springer to trump spewing lies non stop over 90 minutes.

The format just doesn’t work. Also the ability to come up with a quick answer that works on tv isn’t the same as coming up with an answer in real life that helps drive a situation.

Get them in separate rooms and film them answering questions. Play back those answers without them hearing what the other says. Let them listen and respond.
