It was supposed to be beautiful! A 24/7 continuous episode of The Apprentice, except in addition to strangers getting fired for our amusement, there'd be tax cuts, and immigrants locked up and tortured! And when "kids in cages" was added to the mix, it was a dream come true! Ohhh, how could it have gone so wrong???
/sarcasm, obviously

(17,235 posts)It's going to take a lot of money to get the economy back on track and roofs over peoples heads, etc.
So you are correct, although I foresee a 10% to 20% raise for seniors before the 2024 election.

(6,904 posts)have to wait for extra personal items. Extra money does no good to anyone if it can't buy more stuff. I'd be happy if they just keep my SS adjusted for inflation and figure out how to pay for existing medicare.
Right now, many of our fellow Americans need money to keep their homes, their health care, and even their food. Keeping them healthy and reviving the economy has to be the first priority.

(11,468 posts)Lowered her voice saying she wasn't suppose to talk about things like this but we both talked about covid being worse because of Trumps leadership and I said I just read article from a epidemiologist in Spain who said we will have to wear masks for at least two years. she agreed and said when vaccines come in six months she is not taking it, going to wait for more well tested one.
I respect the small pharmacy I go to and the people who work there, this is first time ever any of them have said anything political. I could tell she was angry about President telling people not to wear a mask or distance.
I live in a conservative town in a blue state but I would have guessed they were moderate republicans by how they acted all the years I have been there.
she said when I asked about senior flu shot that it was a political stunt and it incensed her they would do that to seniors. She said they hyped it up saying they had this great shot for seniors but only gave the pharmacies a tiny bit of it. They only made a little of it.

(6,904 posts)instead of senior because it was all I could get at the local pharmacy. I'm still waiting to get a shingles vaccine, since last year, of course that's partly due to covid.

(11,468 posts)Shots last year to was on list all year and got them in Oct and Nov making me late for flu shot since they say not to do two at once and I ended up with bad flu end of Nov, I got shot when i thought i was better second week of Dec and bam flu came back in such a weird awful way for 6 weeks I have wondered if I had covid ever since.

(58,785 posts)Imagine living several decades without developing in wisdom or decency so that in the final years you were the kind of person who would vote for Trump and continue to support him through all his crimes -- until forced to realize you were among your own victims. And THEN blame him.

(4,291 posts)OK, Jacksonville is more that "a few miles" from Vero, but mine has been a deep-red neighborhood since long before I moved here in 2001. Today, there's only one lot on my block that has a TP sign in the front yard. Used to be two. The other is where a devout Catholic couple live, and the husband is a Navy vet*. However, they took down their TP yard sign right after the first debate. There are at least a dozen Biden-Harris yards signs on this single block.
One reason for this shift might be the changing demographics here. A lot of the homes have changed hands over the past few years. Younger families moving in, at least three LGBT families on my block alone, and -- most recently -- an African-American couple, this first of many, I hope. Even so, there are some neighbors who've lived here most of their lives. And they, in their 70s and 80s, are proudly displaying their support for Joe Biden & Kamala Harris, along with down-ticket candidates and "liberal" ballot initiatives.
Another reason could be my neighbors' awareness of what's at stake here. Seniors (yours truly included) who are now drawing benefits from SocSec and Medicare, after paying into those programs for decades, now see the Cowardly Lyin' Traitor's threats to demolish those essential programs as an existential threat. There are others whose lives have been drastically changed since January 2017, especially during Trump's Plague this year. A walk or bike-ride through the Riverside-Avondale historic district -- and even into the much more conservative Ortega area nearby -- reveals the Biden-Harris yard signs outnumber the TP ones at least 7-1.
These unscientific observations are by-no-means representative of the entire First Coast. I've been to St. Augustine and Fernandina Beach, and know that the numbers may be reversed there. Not to mention the inland/exurban and rural counties.
Still, this could be a sea change with the election now underway. And like most other sea changes, this is anything but a localized effect.
FWIW, my USPS letter-carrier picked up my mail-in ballot on Monday, and by Wednesday my ballot was received and counted. Thanks, Mr. Zip!

* We're just blocks away from NAS Jax, and welcome a lot of Navy families here, even if they can only stay a couple of years til their next transfer.

(10,828 posts)Who knew that calling out seniors as selfish for wanting to survive their retirement would turn them away from Trump and his enablers? Who knew that comments like:
There are more important things in life than living
Would realign the vote?
Who knew that Republicans dismissing those over 65 would backfire?
Who knew?
Everyone other than Trumphumpers. And the insane hangers on.
