General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI watched a little of Morning Joe today they were saying nobody on either side
believes the polls. According to the talking heads there are only 4 to 5 points difference between Trump and Biden. Now I turn on Ari Melber he is saying Biden is doing the same or less in the swing states than Hillary was at this time in 2016. Is this the start of a campaign to scare the hell out of us or what? Maybe get out the vote? They managed to make me turn off MSNBC and watch Ancient Aliens.

(89,249 posts)attacks in the elections and right wing voter suppression. She still won by millions and the loss in a few swing states was small.
There is still right wing attempts at voter suppression. And Russian attacks but maybe not as effective.
Concerns without explanations don't tell much.
Biden doesn't have to deal with misogyny and that was a huge part if what hurt Clinton.

(102,276 posts)underplaying how well Biden is doing can backfire by giving Trump cover to claim it was so close to contest.

(5,269 posts)Swing states are very close but I am encouraged that Joe is 50% or higher in several key states where Hillary never got above 48% plus the early voting favoring Dems is soaring and enthusiasm seems unprecedented with black voters when their turnout was lower in 2016 than when Obama ran but seems likely to match Obama's turnout.

(35,337 posts)on and on but it is still close doesn't compute as Spock would say. I will say here in Ohio it appears Trump is doing
far better than 2016. I am sure of one thing his people will not change and they will vote.

(13,991 posts)on this site say they've noticed much more support for Biden than for Clinton. 538 has Ohio as lean democratic. Its definitely in reach for Joe.

(16,846 posts)I've seen individual polls in swing states, lots of them, and a lot of them do have Biden only up about 5%. Ari says that Hillary was further ahead of Trump in those same state polls, such as Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Ari has seen the data, so I'm assuming he's right and he's trying to inform everyone in order to guard against the complacency that was a reason for Hillary's loss. We are going to need every vote we can get. Democrats know that it isn't enough to merely have a lead. Biden has things going for him in this cycle that Hillary didn't, but that doesn't mean it's already over.

(6,904 posts)they are moving towards Biden. That doesn't mean that any Biden supporter who hasn't voted should relax. Vote as early and as safely as you can. My vote was mailed on 10/5 and I intend to check to be sure it was received.

(32,626 posts)assumptions based on previous polls. In 2016, Russia was involved in our elections at the state level. Of course, no votes were changed, because no one looked. The targeting of voting groups by the likes of Cambridge Analytica, and the Russian government, certainly affected turn-out, and yet those poll numbers from 2016 are gospel. Reliable enough to say with authority what the state of the race is, at this moment in time. Every effing day there are new polls. Why is that? Do opinions change by the hour? If the polls from yesterday, are no longer relevant, how come those from 4 years ago are?

(35,438 posts)We should not dismiss the polls. If Biden's lead in the polls holds up and he somehow loses, that means that Trump cheated.

(4,673 posts)came out. That's when Hillary got a big bounce but it went back down.
Joe has been steady, and increasing. Didn't watch Ari but saw someone putting this in context a couple of days ago and it calmed me. There were other differences that I'm not recalling at the moment, but I think we can all feel the different energy.
Also - no 3rd party candidates. Engaged voters. So many stayed home in 2016.
Very different.

(13,991 posts)some huge October surprise takes place, Biden should stay in the lead. His negative rating is better than Clinton's and in many states, he has above 50% which Clinton never hit.
