General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDid Romney say "Let Detroit die" because he cannot make anything worthwhile?
Did he ever build cars like Ford and Iaccoca? Has he ever designed a computer or a platform system like Jobs or Gates? The people I mentioned may not have been the nicest folks alive, but at least they built a business around create things people want and/or need. What has Romney ever created that was worth anything? The more you look at this guy, the emptier his suit gets.

(25,960 posts)Well over half of the cars purchased in this country are foreign makes (closer to 75-85% in a place like San Francisco.)
I think you're mistaken if you think Detroit bashing is a losing campaign position.

And if the Dems hammer it - every state with a manufacturing base. Indiana, Ohio, PA etc...

(25,960 posts)But Michigan's Republican strongholds, particularly in Grand Rapids, get as much mileage out of Detroit bashing as anyone.

The phrase "Made in USA" appears nowhere on your Honda press release, btw.

(25,960 posts)I am more than willing to admit error if you can find a claim in which Honda (not some crappy blog or CATO, or similar) claims Honda is "Made in the USA".
They don't; you can't.
hack89
(39,171 posts)how about you find me any car that can legally be called "Made in the USA"?
Romulox
(25,960 posts)and argue that "Made in the USA" isn't important? I said "Assembled", which is the technically correct term.
hack89
(39,171 posts)the highest domestic content of any car is only 5% higher than a Honda Accord. Why is that significant?
By your criteria, every car made in America is "assembled".

(25,960 posts)I've been on the internet long enough not to respond to the "why don't you research my conjecture for me?" stuff.
I merely stated that Honda's aren't, by law, "Made in the USA". You can prove me wrong if you are able.

What 'Made in the USA' car should I buy?

hack89
(39,171 posts)but that is not a make or break issue for me. Any car company still has to build a car I want to drive in.

I really would like to find the link to that "study" ...
because whenever I point out about how the "foreign cars" are being driven on today's highways, I get RWers pointing out how many of those "foreign" brands are "manufactured in AMERICA" ... (but the profits go overseas).
I've even heard a RW radio station caller pointing out how the evil teachers were driving "foreign cars" ... and I've wanted to call that guy and say "Hey, I bet your favorite Republican will point out the 'foreign car' factories in the U.S. ... stop bad-mouthing the teachers unfairly!"

There is no pass for "Republican" teachers.

(35,392 posts)Those anti-union Republican teachers would probably not want to support a union auto manufacturer ...
I've heard enough "teacher" callers (you know, probably like the liberal-show visiting "phony soldiers" of Rush's mythology) whining about how they were "forced" to join the unions ...

(27,787 posts)I hope Romney runs against as many US industries as he can.
Romulox
(25,960 posts)Detroit has few friends, either way--bashing Detroit is often an effect "dog whistle" for racism, on the national stage, from a diverse group of people.
Has been all my life.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)Sure ... the GOP is going all in on the racist dog whistle thing ... no argument there.
But attacking the "US auto industry" does not carry the dog whistle with it.

(27,787 posts)They attack Unions DIRECTLY ... no dog whistle is needed.
And second, you miss my point ... Romney saying that he would not have "saved the auto industry" is NOT a dog whistle ... however ... if he says "I would not have saved Detroit" ... then YES ... that IS a dog whistle ... just like when they call Obama a "Chicago Thug".
We don't!!!
