It's about to get even worse

It's about to get even worse
Erica Pandey, author of @Work

The weather is getting colder and the days are getting shorter — accelerating the economic and psychological damage of the coronavirus pandemic.

The big picture: During the summer, businesses took advantage of outdoor dining, exercise and shopping, and families and friends safely gathered outside and at a distance. As the season changes, much of what made the last several months bearable will vanish.

Businesses that have made it this far could start closing in droves.

The pandemic has already forced at least 100,000 restaurants to close indefinitely or permanently.
Those that have stayed open in big metros have done so by seating patrons outside. And although many cities are extending outdoor dining permits into the fall and winter, restaurateurs doubt customers will want to sit outside in the cold or the rain — unless they spend big on outdoor heaters.

Many other businesses — from yoga studios to music schools — have been conducting classes outside all summer. Their customers may disappear in the winter, too.

Washington's failure to deliver relief in the form of a stimulus package is hammering the economy.

The unemployment situation is rapidly worsening. "We’re seeing a transition from short-term unemployment to a situation where a lot of these workers are not going to have a job to get back to," says James Stock, an economist at Harvard.

And the lack of stimulus money and unemployment insurance is pushing Americans to tighten their wallets — a troubling sign for the economy's health.

"The expiration of enhanced unemployment insurance benefits pulled $667 billion in purchasing power out of the economy in August alone," per the Economic Policy Institute.

We start in person classes tomorrow. My classes are thankfully small however I have colleagues with numbers around 40.

Masks are required and the admins say they will enforce it.

Shelby County Schools (Memphis region) is all virtual, however, teachers are required to teach online from their classrooms. (Genius, right? )

They just reported a cluster within the district.

Seniors at one district near me is doing hybrid with online only option, were required to be on site for up to 3 days for ACT test.

Incredibly poor planning & management of this event. On the main day, all hybrid students went virtual, so an enormous building had only 400-500 students. All teachers & support staff were required to be in the building.

Why then were kids CRAMMED together, 20+ to a room? With multiple staff in each room. ZERO enforcement of mask mandate. Students with no masks & staff with masks under noses / chins.

I keep asking myself why do they want people sick, dead, or debilitated for life with organ damage? (This is a super red area.)

So ridiculous & sad!

Stay safe!

if we use safety measures, is nearly 400 thousand deaths by Feb. 1st.

God help Joe and Kamala, it is going to take a Herculean effort to make America great again.

Our debt to GDP is now at 100%.

My daughter texted to tell me the school board is most likely going to vote tonite to send the kids back to school full time. How damn stupid. There is a school levy on the ballot and the ignorant parents are bellowing about not voting for the levy until the teachers start teaching their kids. Never mind Dewine has been on tv talking about how our numbers are going up again. There is a lot of wrong wing ignorance around here. $$ and football are the deciding factors in this district. We have two very good teams-one has won the state championship twice in the past three years and ESPN opened their HS season televising a game between our two high schools. The district doesn’t want to lose that sweet $$$$$. Kids and teachers ( and grandparents) health be dammed I guess.

That's $18 billion times four weeks roughly, and that's $72 billion which is a far cry from $667 billion.

I just don't see where they get to a figure that high.

as though we have conquered this thing. Weddings, parties, get togethers....all without masks. There is no way we are going to get through this if people keep acting like this.
Yes, there are millions who are treating it like a deadly pandemic, but millions more who are not. That is not a good formula for success.

We are using a color coded map based on one Harvard came up with. If the map is green in your county, schools open and - just as important as life itself - there's high school football games. GOP Governor Justice has monkeyed with the input criteria so mucn that there is little resemblance now to the Harvard map. Want to make the map look better? Change the thresholds. University clusters making a county look bad? Count each university as one COVID case, whether they have one or 10,000 cases.

I recently got a work from home job. No more substitute teaching. I’m getting the same to sit inside my condo and answer phones for Apple supporting iPhones. After my training I’ll get a $2.45 an hour raise. If I work 470 in the first 60 days I get a $475 bonus. It’s a lot to learn though and I hope it works out for me.
