Sometimes Americans are most motivated to do something when they’re told they’re not allowed to do it.

I thought the purpose of early voting was to make voting dates available for everyone's circumstances and to spread out the voting period to alleviate the crowd bunching and long lines on Election Day. So, instead of pacing out voting attendance over a three-week period, everyone shows up on Day #1, just as if it were the actual Election Day, totally negating the purpose of early voting. Do they purposely want to complain about how long it took?

Why stand in line for 12 hours on Day #1? Come later in the three-week period after the rush has subsided.

I never go on the first day of early voting - it's sort of like shopping on Black Friday! My husband and I usually go either late morning before people get off for lunch or mid-afternoon in the middle of the first week. If we miss the first week, we wait and go mid-week the next one. Most of the time in either of the two locations equal distance from our house there are no lines at all. If there are lines this year we may drive out to the far west side of the county since that early voting location has the lowest turnout in the county, year after year.

I live in Colorado where we vote by mail. I received my ballot, filled it out and dropped it off in an official ballot drop off location all on Saturday. I can tell you I wasn't the only one to do that since the ballots were only just mailed out on Friday and I had plenty of company in visiting the drop box.

What I don't get is willingly waiting for 12 hours in line if one doesn't have to.

In 2016 and 2018 they had so many problems with voting machines and fewer polling places that the lines were really long all through out early voting. Today was a federal holiday so some people may have had the day off and decided to take the time to vote no matter how long it took in order to avoid the lines that may actually be longer in the coming days.
