Close your eyes for a moment and imagine what a lame duck President might be able to do with the sandbags of re-election concerns removed.
- Obama launches a major initiative on gun control, working with Congress and making a direct appeal to rank-and-file members of the NRA.
- Obama begins a massive campaign, both domestic and international, to address global warming.
- Obama affirms that preemptive attack is not national policy and begins an investigation on the Bush/Cheney Iraq war.
- Obama affirms that targeted killings by the American Government will be subject to the most intensive independent review and that decision-makers will be held accountable. He includes himself.
- Obama appoints two Supreme Court justices.
- Obama leads a movement to repeal Citizen's United and review laws related to the 'rights' of Corporations.
- Obama abandons the War On Drugs, saying that drug use is a public health issue.
- Obama lays the political foundations for a single-payer health care system.
Oh, this list could go on and on. Lame-duck Presidencies are not all that common and it is rare that the man in the Oval office uses it to real advantage but to those of you who think I'm just a dreamer, please recall that a lame-duck, Republican President had the guts to go rouge and warn the country about the military-industrial complex.
