U.S. Employers Really Suck Because -----

they are biased against the unemployed. Never in my life have I seen such a stupid ignorant bunch. Discriminating against the unemployed because they lost a job is just too much. The modern American businessman is an arrogant greedy bastard. Refusing to hire the unemployed because they are unemployed is the craziest thing I have ever heard. And the fact that employers are more reluctant to hire a long term unemployed person adds insult to injury. And it flies in the face of common sense.

Being unemployed is not a legitimate barrier. What we are seeing is the ultimate "catch 22".

1. For those that do that, I agree...they suck.

I somewhat understand what may be their concerns, I think. They think that someone who is unemployed is desperate for a job and will take anything, and then use that job as a springboard for a better job. In other words, they are more likely to leave. But no employee guarantees they will stay. And I'm not so sure that someone unemployed will leave any sooner. Seems to me they will be glad they got that job and will stay. BUT...if the employer takes advantage and doesn't pay the new employee what the job should pay, then yes, the employee would leave sooner than someone paid more.

They also think that, when there are massive layoffs, that the companies start laying off the ones who were problems and not productive to begin with. I've been through several layoffs, and I found that to be true, actually. The ones who missed a lot of work, didn't get along with people, were complainers, didn't meet job goals, etc. The things employers take when times are good, they cut those people when times are bad and it's time for layoffs.

Still...I've been unemployed before. I wasn't fired, but still.... I was (and am) a great employee, whether I'm employed or not. I get along with people, am productive, don't miss much work, never miss deadlines, try to keep my skills current, etc. I could easily have been laid off. Any company that would've hired me would've gotten a great employee.

These last layoffs were so large that the company cut into the meat. Some good employees were let go. It took those people a long time to find new jobs, and some never did. The companies that hired those laid off people got some great employees. AND they also paid them below scale.

The employers have definitely taken advantage of the recession.

I've even seen THIS posted (as part of an employment application):

Don't bother to apply
if you aren't already working

I'm surprised this thread hasn't gotten much attention because, let me tell you, things are so BAD out there and prospective employers are compounding it by making it practically impossible to land a job.

Thanks for posting.

organize. There's strength in numbers. I worked construction for 35 years and I know how you feel. Unemployment was a big part of my life during the ronnie raygun and bu$h 1 regimes.

Here's a law firm that shows how companies comply with the law to get foreign labor and NOT to find qualified American workers. This will piss off anyone who sees it.

Hunter Thompson, in Hell's Angels.

I'm not gonna turn into a simpering peon if someone threatens to fire me, 'cuz I've been there. And I've been laid off from here to the equator, so i'm not gonna break laws or work days without pay to avoid something I know I'll live through.
And there are a lot of weak, blustering bosses out there who needto be feared. For those who have not known much respect, fear looks a lot like the same thing - and the real losers prefer it. If you've had respect in your own life, you know fear is a poor, rancid substitute.

No loyalty to humans, cities, states or countries -- just to market values related to profit.

when they treat employees as the enemy.

You don't have to bend over backwards and kiss someone's ass to get a worker to be "loyal" and work hard to make the company/organization "succeed".

You just have to show SOME respect for the employee if you expect them to respect the employer ...

Yeah, there will be ones who will take advantage and screw "you" over ... employers and employees alike ... but if you've earned their respect, they will watch your back.

they love their "freedom" to fire people at will

Sort of like they way plantation owners loved their "freedom" to own slaves
