Please nobody depend on the post election day extensions. They are almost certainly going to be challenged all the way to the Supreme Court. In some states these changes were done administratively not by legislation and in an election year. Yes the padenmic requires changes but we know how hyperpartisan the courts are. There is a reasonable chance at least in some states those ballots received after election day will be nullified. So if you have a mail in ballot (or because of mail fuckery are still waiting) check your state and see if you can drop it off in instead or if you can vote early in person. Procedures vary on voting in person if you are already registered to receive a mail in ballot, so check with your state. In VA for example you must take the mail in ballot (still in its inner sealed envelope) to the poll. They will exchange it one for one. If you don't have it then you are reduced to voting with a provisional ballot.
Most people on DU likely have already voted but share the same message with friends and family.

NOTE: TN does not allow drop of absentee ballots anywhere under any circumstance.

(9,998 posts)I mostly agree with what you said, but since many probably filled in their ballot over the weekend, mailing it today would not be that risky. Of course, there is always the potential for a delay, but there would be 7 delivery days after today, that would still arrive by next Tuesday. Since we're usually talking about mailing within a state or a county, it is extremely likely to get delivered in 2-3 days at most.
But it gets more and more risky after today, so I'd probably say today is the last you could feel completely secure that it will arrive by or before Election Day itself.

(1,488 posts)We did exactly as you suggest.
I really don't trust the voting machines much either but I wanted my paper (and not provisional) ballot so this plan makes the most sense to us.
And in the event of a recount or irregularities, our paper ballots have been received and counted by the BOE.

(54,770 posts)I think odds of getting there are still good, but dropping off, or going to polls, is the surest way.
While a lot of people have voted early, there are still roughly 50% of expected voters who have not.

(7,510 posts)On the other hand, a first class letter to me from a neighboring town was mailed on the 10th and arrived on the 14th - which was 3 business days later.
I suspect that the ballot, which was Business Reply Mail, went through local sorting and delivery. The cancellations on the first class letter showed it going through a processing center about 60 miles away, most likely for front and back imaging.
Business Reply Mail may not be postmarked, since there is no postage to be cancelled. So you should leave enough time to make sure it gets there by November 3.
On the other hand, Business Reply Mail may not need to be routed through an imaging center, since there is no return address on it. Does any postal employee know?
