President Trump has told confidants he'll declare victory on Tuesday night if it looks like he's "ahead," according to three sources familiar with his private comments.
That's even if the Electoral College outcome still hinges on large numbers of uncounted votes in key states like Pennsylvania.
Behind the scenes: Trump has privately talked through this scenario in some detail in the last few weeks, describing plans to walk up to a podium on election night and declare he has won.
For this to happen, his allies expect he would need to either win or have commanding leads in Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, Iowa, Arizona and Georgia.
Why it matters: Trump's team is preparing to falsely claim that mail-in ballots counted after Nov. 3 a legitimate count expected to favor Democrats are evidence of election fraud.
Details: Many prognosticators say that on election night, Trump will likely appear ahead in Pennsylvania though the state's final outcome could change substantially as mail-in ballots are counted over the following days. Trump's team is preparing to claim baselessly that if that process changes the outcome in Pennsylvania from the picture on election night, then Democrats would have "stolen" the election.

(4,846 posts)But if none of the MSM calls enough states for any candidate to reach 270, no one would be declared "president-elect". He can't just declare himself the winner even if he is ahead 10 points in PA, as long as no media calls PA or any other battleground close states for him.
If he is at 200 EC votes and ahead in 4 states, he still can't declare himself the winner as long as no MSM calling those states for him.

(5,015 posts)even the mainstream media calling races is NOT official. They can go back and forth (remember FL 2000?).
The Secretary of State in each state has to certify the state's vote count before the race is final in a state.

(90,800 posts)- people might say "Why bother?", if he's already won.
Not saying they will. Saying they could.
Also, once he declares, he'll frame any further vote counting as unnecessary and cheating. An attempt to steal the election. Projection, of course.
That's when his lawyers will step in and try and stop the count all over. Attacking mail-in ballots of all types (absentee and otherwise).
They claim irregularities at polling places that harm them. They'll claim polling places are staying open illegally.
They will continue to harass voters from now until November 3rd to help suppress the vote and pretend there was trouble at polling places, neglecting the fact that they are the ones causing any problems.
This isn't doom and gloom. This is recognizing the fact that Trump cheats at everything and the fact that Republicans don't have a problem stealing an election.
I think Biden will win - but that doesn't mean Trump won't try to steal it anyway.

(26,045 posts)...but all of the west coast states either have had most of their votes cast early or by mail, or are mail-in only. Declaring anything by even the minute most polls close in the east (5 P.M. Pacific Time) is unlikely to have much of an effect there. Plus, they're all deep-blue states where Trump has no chance of even coming within high single-digits of Biden anyway.

(26,045 posts)I thoroughly expect Trump to have a large lead in PA, and smaller ones in WI and MI, by the early-morning hours of Wednesday.
But it won't last.
And a lot of responsibility is going to have to fall on networks and other media to continually remind the public of how many ballots remain uncounted in those states, and that they're nowhere near ready to be called for either candidate.

(8,543 posts)On Wednesday, he took on NBC News anchor Brian Williams, who said on air: Donald Trump, who has driven well past the last exit to relevance and veered into something closer to irresponsible here, is tweeting tonight.
A sampling of Trumps taunting comments so far makes for some exciting reading. Theres this: Brian, if Im well past the last exit to relevance how come you spent so much time reading my tweets last night? And this: BrianThanks dummyI picked up 70,000 twitter followers yesterday alone. Cable News just passed you in the ratings. And this: Wouldnt you love to have my ratings? An NBC spokeswoman had no immediate comment on Trumps tweets.
Which brings us to the main point about Trump: Hes always the main point. I reached him by phone this morning at his Manhattan office to see what the response had been ...
The fact is that theres a large group of people who like Donald Trump and what Donald Trump says, says Donald Trump. I have no regrets. He has deleted some of his tweets, though. He says thats because he was reacting when it seemed that Obama had won the Electoral College vote but not the popular vote. Thats right around the time that Republican strategist Karl Rove, on Fox News, began challenging Foxs decision to call the election for Obama.

And Trump, by mid-day, seemed to be taking a different approach. This was the Republicans election to win but they just blew itreasons why to follow, reads one tweet. And: Our country is totally split right now but someday it will come together!

I'm not convinced Trump even knows how our election system works.

(24,454 posts)Except this time, not only do we know that it's going to happen, his credibility is damaged so far beyond belief and he's telegraphing everything like crazy right now, hopefully, most people will shrug it off and the media refuses to cover it and/or follow suit unless they have some independent confirmation. If Florida or Texas falls (to Biden) early on though, it will be lights out though and everybody knows it.
