(52,206 posts)They called it for Reagan in 1984 minutes after the polls closed on the east coast, even before the polls closed in most of the country. They're more careful about that now.
But yeah, the important thing is a correct count, not a hasty count.

(244 posts)I lived in DC at the time. The inauguration was epic. I had relatives in town for it. A whole group of us went downtown several days for the concerts, parties, etc. and of course the inauguration itself. Good times. Would be doing the same this year if it werent for Covid. 😒. (Yes, I believe Biden is going to win. 😃

(21,847 posts)But it also provided for an inauguration in March, 5 months later. (Inauguration was changed to January 20 by the 20th Amendment.) This clearly shows that the original framers of the Constitution did NOT think counting and tallying the votes did not end on election day. If they did, they never would have set the inauguration 5 months after the election.
Let's see how the originalists on the Supreme Court handle that, if Fat Nixon tries to get the court to stop counting the votes on election day.
