...it stands to any reason that a victory is important here, but this one shouldn't be looked at like it's some kind of harbinger of a hopelessly broken electorate.
If you thought our racial and social divisions were going to be solved on election day, you might be a bit disappointed this morning, even as we angle to unseat the defacto leader of the nation's white supremacist movement. But you're on the right track in expecting for the election to begin the task of reparing some of the tears to our social fabric.
Here's the thing. Achieving the presidency will be just as consequential as it was for Trump's ascendance to office-this time for the good. There will be actual leadership, changing outcomes for Americans and changing minds.
This time we will have a president who got to office with the support of a clear majority of votes cast, something which appears to be a Democratic hallmark, a measure of legitimacy not shared by the opposition. Moreover, Joe Biden will have achieved the presidency against a virulently autocratic incumbent, something remarkable and significant no matter how you view the strength of the incumbency.
Look at what Trump did with three million-plus votes in the hole. Joe Biden will exceed that 2016 margin and begin governing with the actual support of a majority of Americans. Imagine that.
If there's one thing we need to learn from Republicans, its that there are no moral victories in politics. You win, you take power, you leverage that power.
And let's not forget that if Biden does pull this off, he'll have:
1) Won the electoral college
2) Won the popular vote
3) Received the highest number of votes for president in American history
4) Defeated an incumbent president, which has only happened once in the last 40 years
So there's that...

(12,310 posts)Without the senate he will not be able to get much done.
Meanwhile, at least we can put a stop to the escalating craziness, and start undoing every executive order Turd has issued.

(85,996 posts)...and I'm still looking at at least 4 races where we may make that point moot.
ME, NC, and GA have 4 seats up for grabs and we only need 2.

(85,996 posts)We do have the votes there, we just need to get them counted.

(1,603 posts)We regained control of the White House, gained at least one Senate seat, and picked up a few more in the House.
Here's what didn't happen last night:
* Trump didn't receive a second term as President, possibly ending the country as a Democracy.
* The House didn't revert back to the Republicans, which would have just hastened the process
* We didn't have riots or looting or armed thugs attacking voters
* The Republicans didn't gain more seats, making it even harder for them to turn the country into one-party rule, and forcing McConnell to compromise more.
With Biden,
* we throw out the Barrs and DeJoys and the Salazars and replace them with people who are neither corrupt nor incompetent,
* we stop the hemorrhaging of civil service people,
* we restore the CDC and sort out real responses to the Pandemic
* we rejoin the Paris Accords
* we clean up the damage done to the EPA, get rid of all of those Trump EOs and start sane Climate Change responses
* we no longer conduct important governmental business on Twitter
* we no longer have to deal with abusive MFers gaslighting us
So, yeah, I'll take it
