It was a very stressful evening--even more than it needed to be.

And all the rosy "predictions" - a rout! A landslide! A humiliation! Stick a fork in him!

I'd laugh if it weren't all so sad.

by giving it to DU. I understand the need to offload or share one's freak-out, but in some cases if they'd just been drinking heavily it would have been easier on the rest of us.

They were reporting as if this were a typical election night, giving percentages and totals for counties and states without clearly announcing numbers of outstanding mail ballots to be counted, and when those counts could be expected to take place. And coloring states in red if Trump was ahead in that moment.

Even though we (or at least I, and assume others) knew all these factors intellectually, the way they were treating the numbers incited fear and shock on an emotional level.

they had a graphic ( a bar graph) for every county showing proportion of early vote, same day votes, etc..

1 - Trauma from 2016
2 - Inflated expectations (I mean, people were criticized here if they expressed concerns about the polling inflating Biden's performance in a state)
3 - The variations between the different state with how absentee votes were going to be reported and how that was presented on TV.

Regarding #2, I think I drank maybe half a glass of Kool-aid. I didn't think Biden would do as well as the polling suggest, but at the same time I thought he would do better (I was thinking Biden would win by 3-4% in WI and MI).

I checked the board here and there, but for my own sanity, I found other things to do. The votes were cast and the polls were closed, so fretting wasn't going to do any good.

My daughter called this morning freaking out, worried she wasn't going to have medical care. I told her to stop watching coverage and do something distracting. I'm not minimizing the very real extreme stress that a lot of folks felt, but we were at a point where it was just a waiting game.

One thing I don't understand is why a poster would ask almost the same identical question every hour or two for half a day, even after they got dozens of really good answers to their question the first time.

There should be a rule that no one is allowed to be discouraged unless I say it is okay. Several times last night, I made it crystal clear that I was 100% confident that Joe Biden had secured the win .....that ballots just needed to be counted. I've learned to trust H2O Man's judgement on these things.
